The venue features:

Getting to the venue

Wakefield is well served by rail and coach transport from all over the UK and there are good local bus services between the railway and coach stations and the show.

There is free on-site parking, including disabled parking, and AA signs marking routes to the show from the motorways and other main routes.

Most people travelling to the show by public transport from outside the area will arrive by rail, most likely at Wakefield Westgate station.

The station is a simple walk of approximately three quarters of a mile to the show venue, but, as an added service to visitors, for the first time this year we are providing a free Courtesy Minibus service between the station and the show at Thornes Park Athletics Stadium.

With the cooperation of Great North Eastern Railway, the bus will operate from the car park directly outside the station entrance.

Exact schedules will be publicised later. The aim will be to connect with GNER arrivals from London and Doncaster and Virgin Cross Countr arrivals from Birmingham and the southwest from around 9:30am onwards.

Later, when visitors are ready to go home, they can be dropped either at Westgate railway station or at the Wakefield bus/coach station. Again, the aim will be to connect with principal GNER and VXC services.

Opening times

Saturday: 10:00am until 5:30pm;
Sunday: 10:00am until 4:00pm.

On the Saturday, the show will declared open by The Mayor of Wakefield.

Entrance prices

To order advance tickets, please send a cheque or postal order, made payable to WACG Show, to the address below. (Sorry; credit/debit cards are not accepted.) Advance tickets will be available from mid-January.

The Foundation rate is available on production of a Foundation membership card.

As a special offer, members of the Wakefield Acorn Computer (User) Group and the ARM Club can gain admittance on the Sunday for the reduced price of £2.50, provided that they show their membership card.

Attractions

In addition to all the principal manufacturers, developers and dealers in the RISC OS market, the show's attractions will include:

Over 25 exhibitors are currently booked in and this number is growing daily. The exhibition is all at ground floor level, with good access for the disabled. The show theatre and all-day catering are on the 1st floor, but there is a lift which is big enough for wheelchairs.

A new attraction is the Final of the RISCOS Ltd Demo Competition. This has been promoted to encourage programmers to write eye-catching demonstrations which utilise to the full the capabilities of the RISC OS operating system and hardware.

We will also have all the regular features including, the RiscStation Small Developers Village, the Castle Technology Internet Café, the R-Comp Games Arcade and, of course, the Show Theatre with a full programme of lectures and demonstrations on both days.

Charity donations

One of the major attractions at the show will be the ever-popular Bring & Buy Charity Stand, which will provide an excellent opportunity to clear your shelves of unwanted items of computer hardware, software and accessories. Show visitors will be able to browse through the donated items and pick up some surprising bargains.

While donations brought along to the show will be very welcome, it would be even more helpful if items could be posted, or delivered, in advance. Wakefield Hospice, which will be the principal beneficiary, has kindly volunteered to receive and store items for the stand until showtime.

Items should be sent to:

RISC OS 2001: The RISC OS Show of the Year

This year's RISC OS Show will take place on Saturday & Sunday, 20th & 21st October 2001 at a new venue: the Blue Mountain Conference Centre, Binfield, near Reading.

The RISC OS 2001 Show builds upon the huge success of the RISC OS 2000 Show, which was held at the Epsom Downs racecourse in Surrey in October 2000.

Due to an increase of more than 15% in the cost of hiring Epsom Downs for the 2001 show, which we believe to be unfair to prospective exhibitors, the organising committee has decided to move to a similar venue in the Reading area, bringing the following benefits over Epsom:

The RISC OS 2001 Show will of course feature all of the existing attractions and facilities of RISC OS 2000, including a minibus service from Reading's main railway station. More details of featured attractions, exhibitors, theatre timetables, recommended routes etc. will be available in due course.

As with RISC OS 2000, the RISC OS 2001 Show is organised by the ARM Club, ROUGOL and SASAUG, with help from the Association of Acorn User Groups. It aims to be the RISC OS show of the year, with support from RISC OS manufacturers, dealers, developers and users, and to create a truly unique and prestigious RISC OS event.

Midlands RISC OS Show 2001

The ARM Club will be holding the Midlands RISC OS Show on Saturday, 1st December 2001 at the National Motorcycle Museum, Coventry Road, Bickenhill, Solihull, near Birmingham, West Midlands.

The venue is just off junction 6 of the M42, at the junction of the M42 and the A45.

RISC OS Southeast Show 2002

Organised by the Surrey and Sussex Acorn User Group (SASAUG), the RISC OS Southeast Show 2002 will take place on Saturday, 2nd November 2002 at The Main Building, Guildford Technical College, Stoke Road (A320), Guildford, Surrey.

A map to the venue is shown to the right (click for a larger version); free parking will be available. For rail access, many lines converge at Guildford, and a bus service provides a link to the college. Alternatively, visitors may walk from the station, as the college is less than three quarters of a mile away. Since there is an existing bus route, no shuttle bus service to the show venue is required, and hence the entrance price can be kept low.

The station is a simple walk of approximately three quarters of a mile to the show venue, and there are frequent bus services. Detailed public transport information may be found on the show's Web site.

Opening times

The doors will open to the public at 10:00am and close at 4:30pm.

It has been decided to run only a one-day event this year, partly due to low attendances on the Sunday in the past.

Entrance prices

Tickets Please pay at the door
Adults £5.00
Children under 16 (accompanied by an adult) Free

In order to help keep costs down, no advance tickets will be available this year.

Note that, although under-16s will be free if accompanied by an adult, large parties of under-16s arriving together will be subject to the normal entry charge.

RISC OS Southeast Show 2003

Organised by the Surrey and Sussex Acorn User Group (SASAUG), the RISC OS Southeast Show 2002 will take place on Saturday, 18th October 2003 at The Main Building, Guildford Technical College, Stoke Road (A320), Guildford, Surrey.

Maps to the venue are shown to the right (click for larger versions); free parking will be available.

Opening times

The show will open at 10:00am and close at 4:00pm.

Entrance prices

A single price of £5 applies to all tickets, which will be available only at the door; no advance ticket bookings are available.

Please note that Guildford College operates a 'no smoking' policy.

Catering

On-site catering will be available from 10:30am to 3:30pm (along the corridor to the left of the main entrance).

Midlands RISC OS Show 2003

CANCELLED

It is with great regret that the ARM Club is forced to announce the cancellation of the Midlands Show, which was to have been held on 29th November 2003.

Our normal venue, the National Motorcycle Museum, suffered a severe fire on 16th September, destroying several parts of the building and rendering many more parts unusable. The suite we had booked was damaged in the fire, and has been declared unsafe. Since the fire we have attempted to find alternative venues in the area, but unfortunately have found nothing suitable and available. Cancellation is not a decision that we have taken lightly, and we appreciate the disappointment to visitors and exhibitors alike.

At this stage we are planning to run the show again in 2004, by which time the Museum should be back in functioning order.

A free minibus will be provided from Wakefield Westgate railway station (and possibly elsewhere) to the venue (courtesy of APDL and Virtual Acorn).

The show will feature a theatre with 100–120 seats, a prize draw, catering and free car parking facilities for up to 350 cars.

UK events diary for 2000 to 2003

Here is a record of past and future meeting dates for UK clubs. For further details of guest speakers, topics covered, location of and directions to meeting places, contact the club concerned directly.

Note that, for convenience, clubs are listed by area in the table below, as the location of a meeting is generally more useful than a club acronym (e.g. "Bottisham" rather than "BAUG"). However, clicking on an area reference will take you to the information page about the club in question.
