Anti-surge and lightning protection

31st October 2000

ExpLAN Computers Ltd

Surge Suppression for computers and networks:

ExpLAN has for many years installed computer networks incorporating anti-surge devices to protect against spikes on the mains. These prevent voltage swings being applied across the inter-connected computer equipment with the resultant damage of line-drivers and circuitry communicating with external equipmemt.

It is much cheaper and more effective to install a single protection system onto the mains power distribution board of your premises than it is to use lower-level filtering adjacent to the computer equipment itself.

For further info on the devices we use, visit our website page
www.explan.co.uk/antisurge/

This page will soon be expanded to include installation notes, theoretical background info and FAQs. Bookmark it and look again soon.

GraphDraw updated to version 2.57

31st October 2000

Chris Johnson

An updated version (now 2.57) of GraphDraw is now available from

http://www1.che.hw.ac.uk/~soft/

The changes are primarily minor bug fixes. GraphDraw allows the entry and editing of x,y data values, which may then be fit to best straight line, best parabola, polynomial (order up to six), cubic spline, or simply plotted as points or joined lines. The resulting graph may be printed, or exported as a draw file for inclusion in documents, or as a multiplot file to allow several graphs to be combined. GraphDraw runs on RISC OS versions 3.1 upwards.

Manuals in Ovation Pro or Impression format may also be downloaded.

!Jcut v3.00

29th October 2000

David

!Jcut version 3.00 is now on my Free Stuff web page,

http://www.dacha.freeuk.com/free/

Version 3.00 has a completely revamped interface for easier JPEG cut & paste, cropping, rotating, flipping, and now contrast & colour adjustment - all without the image degradation that would result from decoding the JPEG to process it and then re-JPEGing it.

Surftec Ltd announces DigiFlash a CompactFlash reader for RISC OS

26th October 2000

Neil Farnham-Smith

Surftec Ltd, Thursday 5th October 2000 is pleased to announce the launch of DigiFlash.

This opens up a new and exciting way of allowing RISC OS users to read data from CompactFlash and SmartMedia cards from devices such as Digital Camers, PDAs etc.

There are two versions of DigiFlash, one for CompactFlash and the other for SmartMedia.

Once the adapter has been plugged into the parallel port and the software has been loaded, DigiFlash adds an extra disc icon to the left side of the iconbar allowing files to be copied from the media just like a floppy disc! The media can even be shared across an Acorn Access network, ideal for use in a classroom environment.

The reader allows other devices to be plugged into it, such as printers, meaning no swapping of cables required!

DigiFlash requires a RISC OS machine with a bi-directional parallel (printer) port; this allows almost all Acorn machines (including Acorn Network Computers) except Archimedes range and the A3000.

The reader software has been put through extensive testing, compatibility lists are being built up.

DigiFlash was launched at RISC OS 2000 Show in Epsom on the 21st and 22nd of October. The Compact Flash version is currently available with the Smart Media version expected to be ready within the next couple of weeks.

*** LATEST ***

DigiFlash is soon expected to work with the new IBM MicroDrive and our policy is to make all upgrades freely available via the Surftec web site to registered users.

Prices are as follows:

CompactFlash Reader and DigiFlash Drivers: 79ukp exc VAT
SmartMedia Reader and DigiFlash Drivers: 79ukp exc VAT
DigiFlash Drivers: 39ukp exc VAT

The above readers also come with their original Windows PC drivers.

Press Information:

Images, logos and additional text is available from http://press.surftec.net/ ideal for magazine print.

Tenth Anniversary of The ARM Club

The ARM Club has announced that to celebrate 10 years since its formation in 1990, a special open day will be held on Saturday 18th November 2000.

The Open Day will feature a unique mixture of the past, present and future of Acorn computers, including the BBC Micro which was so successful during the 1980s, the Acorn Archimedes which many schoolchildren used during the 1990's, and the Risc PC which carried the Acorn name into the 21st century.

More recent developments, such as the Kinetic Risc PC, the ViewFinder video card for Risc PC, and the new ARM powered RISC OS computers from RiscStation and MicroDigital, should also be on display.

Visitors will be welcome to bring along their Acorn or ARM-powered computers, no matter how old, to show off the innovative and unusual ways in which they can be used. There will be special prizes for the oldest and rarest Acorn machines brought along.

To mark The ARM Club's tenth anniversary, there will be photographic displays of both the Club's and Acorn's past, as well as a chance to meet past and present Club members over a cup of coffee. For younger visitors, the latest computer games will be available to play, and there will be a bring and buy stand for previously used Acorn equipment.

Club founders Rene and Maria Barreto said, "When The ARM Club reached its fifth anniversary, we were delighted. Now that the tenth anniversary is approaching, we would like to share the event with all Acorn users, past and present."

ARM Club Chairman Toby Smith commented, "The ARM Club has seen a great many changes in the past decade, as we have developed our priorities to meet the changing interests and requirements of our members. The success of the RISC OS 2000 show demonstrated that the future of ARM and RISC OS systems is as promising as ever, so I am very pleased that this open day will give Acorn users a chance to look back at the past as well as looking forward to the future."

As with the recent RISC OS 2000 show, the RISC OS User Group of London (ROUGOL) will also be assisting in organising this event, as well as displaying some interesting bits and pieces of ARM-powered hardware and software (as well as older Acorn systems).

The Open Day will be held on Saturday 18 November from 11am-3pm at Barnet Community Centre, Algernon Road, Hendon, London NW4 3TA.

British Rail - Hendon
Underground - Hendon Central.

Admission free.

Foreign language support in RISCOS and other contributions

25th October 2000

Benoît Gilon

Latest additions include:

NIH new release (v0.2):
NIH is a set of software pieces to make interactive help applications deal with two "token" sets in their internal dictionary instead of one. One set for English speaking tokens (eg TS:Click SELECT to ) and one separate set for local mother language tokens (eg US:Cliquez SELECT pour in French). The new release provides a tool to make application developer life cooler. Currently, a patch to Acorn !Help application (upto RO3.70) is provided. I hope to offer a patch to BubbleHlp (2.11 for which source is available for download) very soon.

CWDSupport:
CWDSupport is a small module providing private environment variables and file system setting (CSD, PSD, URD and Lib per file system) to each registered Wimp task (as described in a Archive magazine past issue article).

StrongED French resources (development in progress.. but workable anyway)
Message files are completed, StrongHlp manual is 90% complete (not considering technical material), and Template files should follow soon (now that I got the right Template editor). Modefile localization sould follow in a not so far future...

The URL to visit is: http://bgilon.free.fr/RISCOS/riscosE.htm and then follow the links.

ArtToSpr and masked sprites

23rd October 2000

Tony Houghton

Once or twice in the past I've been asked whether ArtToSpr could be made to generate masked sprites. Until now I considered it impractical, but I recently had a need for some masked bitmaps of Artworks originals, so I devised a way of generating masks. The fruits of this labour are available from <http://www.realh.co.uk/free.html#arttospr>.

Please note that it isn't immediately obvious how to enable masking, so please RTFM before contacting me about it.

21st October 2000

Simon Anthony

Hi world.

A long time ago I wrote stuff for ECS. I don't now, it doesn't exist. But, the software is still improving and is still available. It is all almost totally re-written (save for some help files) and is now all mine to offer up as what I call Job-Shareware. ie, use it and give me a job - or money (better, both)

The apps are:

NewSaver Now called SaveIT - A file saver helper for home, school or office which makes it hard to lose files and easy to save them.

PuzzleIT - an app which makes rectangular piece puzzles from any image you have - at up to 100 pieces (from 4).

PresentIT rather Beta stage, presentation creation and display - Draw and Paint driven - rather good. Even does 24bit animations within slideshows.

LadyBay - an early learning tutor for reading and maths

Tortils - a desktop utility of massive power and splendidnes

oh, and other stuff too.

It is all on my site at http://www.torty.org.uk/sware.html There is a lot of other stuff on the site too so put asside a day or two and come and have a trawl.

!RiscSearch mailing list

20th October 2000

Patrick Mortara

I just want to let you know that !RiscSearch has its own mailinglist now. Its hostet by Smartgroups.com, and you can subscribe to it by sending a mail to 'riscsearch-subscribe@smartgroups.com'. The list is open for all kinds of discussions related to !RiscSearch.

There will be !RiscSearch v0.35 available soon, and I'm just searching for about 5 - 10 people who want to test this new version before it's released, anyone interested?

!RiscSearch is meant to be a meta-search engine, and AFAIK it is the only one available for RISC OS anywhere. It helps you finding web-pages about a certain topic by asking different search-engines about that topic. It collects results from (at the moment) 10 different engines, sorts out duplicate matches and then presents all matches in a window of your web-browser.

Imago XScale processor developement

19th October 2000

Richard Jozefowski

There has been some speculation on the newsgroups recently with regard to Imago and the new XScale processor. XScale is Intel's successor to the StrongARM processor. This is a very exciting development as it promises many times the processor power and memory bandwidth of the current StrongARM.

Imago was always designed to accept new processors and an XScale module is already being developed. It will shortly be put through its paces. This will enable us to ensure that when Imago is released it is compatible with the XScale processor.

Whilst XScale chips are now being sampled to a few key developers by Intel, it is likely to be some months before they are available in production quantities. Also note that the new processor does not support 26-bit processor mode, therefore it cannot be used to run the current version of RISC OS directly. Applications and modules may also need to be updated.

We will post more news on this development in due course.

Announcing the new version of Spheres of Chaos

18th October 2000

Iain McLeod

Announcing even more psychadelic mayhem for RISC OS.....

I have arranged with R-Comp Interactive for the new new version of Spheres of Chaos (2) to be available (and on display) at the Epsom Show this weekend. You'll be able to purchase a "proper" copy of the game on disc etc.,incl a registered version, and a reg code for use with future versions, which there will probably be since I keep meddling with the game. It should be on display in the Arcade too, in which case, my highscore is around 9M.....

I should really be calling it SoC 2000. I did think of calling the windoze version 'Spheres of Chaos 1900'. (Hohoho :-)

The new version includes:

The show price will be 15 pounds including VAT.
<fx cash till going Ching! /fx>

And (serious mode for a moment) if you want new games for your RISC OS machines, support their creation by buying them (!!). An entire several people bought the version of SoC I published recently (and cheers to you who did :-). But I think there are more than 6 people playing it out there... I have an original idea (original on any platform) for a new game. It would be nice to have a viable RISC OS market for it. You could persuade me there is by buying Soc II.

A demo (and registrations for) this new version will be on my web site:
http://www.chaotica.u-net.com/ after the show.

And finally...
That teacup self-play thing (which also works with a stapler, I am told), is true (except I can't make it happen anymore!). What happens is shots create collectables, and can also collect them. If you get a lot of shots about, they create and collect more collectables, which leads to even more shots about. The game can 'go critical', rather like a nuclear reaction, and play itself as long as you keep firing. This tended to happen very easily if the 'collectable chance%' was even slightly above normal, and even happened at normal levels, which spoils the game. I couldn't really reduce the collectable % much more because they would be very sparse in normal play, so instead I cludged it. If you have a shot-generating power-up, the game temporarily reduces the collectable %., and reduces it even more for several power up's. You can still temporarily make it 'go critical', but you have to use some skill now. If you wind the collectable % up to 19.9%, it should still go silly, which is why I let the value go up to 19.9%. Except I couldn't get it to self-play last time I tried...

R-Comp Interactive announce Network Printer Drivers

17th October 2000

R-Comp Interactive (RCI)

We are pleased to announce that Network Printer Drivers for RISC OS machines are now available. The purpose of these drivers is to allow computers running RISC OS to print using network-enabled printers, and also network printer server boxes (or computers).

The software includes drivers for the two most common network print protocols for such devices:

As well as including driver software for these protocols, the software from RCI includes special easy-to-use setup software, and a manual explaining how to set things up from your RISC OS desktop.

The drivers work transparently alongside !Printers, and allow you to mix and match traditional parallel etc. printers with lpr and JetDirect printers.

How much does it cost?
By its very nature, the network printer driver product is likely to be used on several machines, so we only offer a site licence version of this product. However at just 40ukp inc VAT, the pricing is such that the site licence is essentially "free".

Who should be interested?
With many RISC OS owners having more than one computer, and with many new RISC OS machines coming with built-in networking, this should be of great interest to a lot of people.

The beauty of this network printing is that it is fast and platform independent. Any type of computer on the network should be able to print to a network printer, without requiring other machines to be turned on or dedicated to printer serving. Oh, and it alleviates most of the "printer-port-related" problems people have with printing too.

We anticipate most interest from small business owners, printers, and schools, although anyone looking for a flexible "growth-capable" solution to networking printers should find this to their liking.

What do you need?
Naturally, you will need to have a network card in your RISC OS computer. Many mid-high range printers come with network connections built in, or as a low-cost option. The printer is then connected via a standard network socket into your network.

If you don't own a printer with a network connection, then you can purchase network print server boxes. We expect to offer bundles of these with the drivers in due course. A box like that costs around 100+VAT, and is basically an "external" network card for your printer. One end of the box has a network socket, the other a standard printer port. Such devices can have up to 3 printer ports, and can be re-used, so it is a one-off expenditure.

The print server box method makes mixing inkjet and laser printers extremely easy.

How compatible is it?
We have tested (or have had tested) the drivers on a number of devices:

What networks does it support?
The software is designed to work on standard TCP/IP ethernet networks. It has been written so that all you need to do is have the inbuilt Access networking enabled, and you'll be able to make use of it, although some network knowledge is helpful.

If you have full TCP/IP network enabled, then things become slightly more flexible, but the software is designed to be as easy as possible, whilst retaining flexibility.

Personal recommendation?
We now only print via lpr or JetDirect, with the exception of an old Calliagraph printer that requires a special RISC OS podule to drive it. When utilising new printers, we would not even consider hooking them up to computers' printer ports, unless for some reason it was absolutely necessary.

NewsHound V1.40 released

15th October 2000

Joseph Heenan

I've just uploaded NewsHound 1.40 to my website:

<http://www.ping.demon.co.uk/acorn/download.html>

Its mainly a collection of bug fixes (in particular the new version of the transport works better with Messenger Pro), but this is also the first version that doesn't have its own DNS code built in, which makes it smaller and will hopefully cause less configuration problems.

As a side note, I've recently got my RISC PC back online after a while without it. I've now caught up with my emails again, so if you've sent me an email in the last month or two and not had a reply, its probably either because I thought I'd already replied to it, or my reply bounced because of an invalid email address... feel free to resend it.

[Also, the newshound/popstar/webget mailing lists are down at the moment due to a machine failure. Hopefully they'll be up again within a week or so.]

DiscKnight and Disc Formats

15th October 2000

David J. Ruck

Just to clear up the issue of which disc formats DiscKnight works on, for all the people who have emailed me. DiscKinght checks and repairs the following FileCore formats on ADFS/SCSI/IDEFS filing systems:

E - RISC OS 3.1 to 4, 10 character filenames, 77 files/dir
E+ - RISC OS 4 only, long filenames large file, 80000+ files/dir

I think the confusion has arisen because people often refer to new format as F+ I can reassure E+ and F+ are one and the same.

R-Comp announce SiteSeer v1.07 update

14th October 2000

R-Comp

R-Comp are pleased to announce that version 1.07 of our SiteSeer web site grabbing software is now available.

SiteSeer allows users to grab whole or partial web sites down onto their hard discs, for viewing offline. The software allows sites to be maintained automatically, and produces an HTML index of the sites available.

The latest version has a number of tweaks and enhancements, including several interface improvements for RISC OS 4 users, testing on the latest hardware, a new version of the page fetcher, and the ability to trigger connections via our DialUp connection program, if the user approves.

As usual, the upgrade has been sent out automatically to registered users. If you think you should have received a copy, but haven't, you should contact us in about 48 hours time, to give your ISP a chance to deliver.

SiteSeer costs just 25ukp, and can be ordered from the R-Comp web site, or over the phone, or via any other usual method.

The new version will also be available at the Epsom show next weekend, alongside all the other new R-Comp releases.

DiscKnight, E & E+ disc repair

14th October 2000

David J. Ruck

The most feared RISC OS error messages have to be:

They mean that some or all of your valuable data has been lost in the case of the first two, or might be about to in the case of the second. Currently there are programs that can repair hard discs in the old E format, but none for the new E+ (long filenames and large directory format) that comes with RISC OS 4. This has put many people off reformatting their discs to take advantage of one of the best features of RISC OS 4, and even going as far as not upgrading to the superb OS altogether.

The good news is that in less than a week's time a new disc checking and repair program called DiscKnight will be launched at the RISC OS 2000 show (Epsom Downs, October 21-22, see http://www.armclub.org.uk/riscos2000/). It handles both the old E and new E+ FileCore formats, checks and fixes 64 different faults, and has a full undo feature incase of difficulties. DiscKnight comes with a desktop front end, and comprehensive step by step instructions.

DiscKnight will be sold for the ridiculous price of only 10ukp (9ukp for ARM Club members), so that as many people as possible can have the reassurance that if the worst should happen, their valuable data is not lost forever. This price includes free email support, and telephone support for ARM Club members.

For a free checking only version of DiscKnight, and ordering details if you cant make it to the show, visit our website at:

80's style retro game released

8th October 2000

Paul Vigay

I've been rummaging around some old floppy discs and discovered a game I wrote back in 1990 - which seems to work ok under StrongArm and RISC OS 4 (although it should still work on older machines), so I've decided to release it as freeware - as I still found myself addicted to it after a few games tonight.

Called Rune Seeker, it's basically a 2D adventure/maze game where you must explore various rooms and collect all the keys that have been scattered around. There are also various bonuses, treasure chests and puzzles to solve along the way. Although it's old and my artistic ability is none too hot, it's still quite a fun game containing colourful, cheery graphics. :-)

Later levels also have a rather unfriendly Yeti to contend with (you can hear him stomping around when he gets near you!).

There are 12 fiendishly difficult levels so I doubt anyone will complete all 12. By the time you do, I expect I'll have updated the level editor (the one part which didn't quite work on newer machines).

It also features a savable high score table (and I've also added a high score table to the web page, if you get good enough).

Anyway, it's now available to download from
http://www.vigay.com/shareware.html and is just over 400K long as a ZIP archive (including quite a few 'atmospheric' sound effects etc.

Please enjoy..... ;-)

Organizer - new address + progress report

5th October 2000

Chris Morison

Just to let you know I now have a new e-mail and web-site address, organizer@morison.net and http://www.organizer.morison.net/

** Don't forget the single "R" and single "S" in "morison" **

At the moment these will just forward you to my old ukgateway address and web-site, but I will be able to take the morison.net addresses with me when I change ISP (which I'm considering).

Work is continuing on the Psion Synchronisation which should hopefully be finished by the Epsom show, and will be a free upgrade to registered users of Organizer version 1.50.

I'm not sure if I mentioned it, but to perform the psion sync I had to improve the number of fields in the address-book so I've actually made the fields user-definable. I also made it support separate home and work addresses, phone numbers, emails, etc while I was at it. Those features were going to be in the next non-free upgrade but now fully registered users will get them for free! Ah well ;-)

See you all at the RISC OS 2000 show in a few weeks:

Rename V3.02

4th October 2000

Nick Roberts

A new version of !Rename is now available at

http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/tigger/programs/progs.html

This version is primarily a bug-fix, correcting a problem that meant that recursion down the directory tree would usually fail.

!Rename uses !Edit-like wildcard patterns to apply sophisticated renaming rules to many files at the same time; for example, an entire directory of files can have DOS or unix filetype extensions to be added or removed.

Roots - Family tree layout

3rd October 2000

Alex Waugh

Announcing the release of Roots

Roots is a program for graphically laying out a family tree. You move people around and link them using drag and drop. It can also store a small amount of information about each person, but that is not its main function. It can import GEDCOM, and export DrawFiles and GEDCOM. Trees can be printed, spanning several pages if necessary.

It has been designed to be flexible, so if the style of layout is not to your taste then you can alter it.

Roots is shareware, and can be registered online or by snail mail.

More information can be found at my website (http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/~ajw498/), where Roots can be downloaded.

!RiscSearch V0.3ß

3rd October 2000

Patrick Mortara

I've just uploaded !RiscSearch V0.3ß to my homepage (www.patrick-mortara.de)

Changes in V0.3: (the first 4 changes are based on help from Ed Van der Meulen, thanks!!)

For all of you who don't know about !RiscSearch: !RiscSearch is meant to be a meta-search engine, and AFAIK it is the only one available for RISC OS anywhere. It helps you finding web-pages about a certain topic by asking different search-engines about that topic. It collects results from (at the moment) 10 different engines, sorts out duplicate matches and then presents all matches in a window of your web-browser.

New CD-ROM: Easy C++

3rd October 2000

David Bradforth

Easy C++: available once again

Easy C++ is a superb implementation of the C++ programming language. Originally published by Beebug in 1995, the only reason it became unavailable was due to that company running out of manuals. The main purpose of this announcement, though, is to state it's available again, and we have two separate prices for it:

Easy C++ CD-ROM with Documentation on Disc ukp27.50
Easy C++ CD-ROM with Printed Manual* ukp47.50

To obtain * you must be resident in the UK, or pay the additional postage costs to send the manual overseas. It's got a lot of pages, and weighs quite a bit!

To order, send a cheque/postal order for the amount specified [made payable to ProAction] to
