Any comments on the web site, or the applications, always welcome.
Stuart Tyrrell Developments are proud to announce that they have succesfully learned their 89 times table!
In celebration of this, we are pleased to announce the following special deals:
The Zip250 drive is capable of reading and writing both 100MB and 250MB zip disks, and may be fitted within a 3.5" bay, or in a 5.25" bay using our mounting/power pack below. Please note that the drive is slightly longer than a normal floppy drive, and so may only be fitted in a 3.5" slot *without* a backplane behind unless connectors are modified (bear in mind the IDE card requires a backplane though!) - we recommend the 5.25" fitting kit.
Simtec's acclaimed IDE interface takes up a single podule slot and comes complete with IDE cable. It comes complete with drivers for Zip drives on its internal FLASH memory.
Iomega Zip 250/Interface pack (Zip250, IDE interface, IDE cable, mounting screws): UKP89 inc VAT and carriage.
Iomega Zip 250 5.25" Mounting/Power pack (rails, front panel, power splitter, screws): UKP10 inc VAT and carriage.
Zip250 discs: UKP15 inc VAT and carriage.
Suitable for use with RISC OS 3.7 and later, this single platter drive has a 2MB buffer. It consumes less than 6W in read/write operation (<4W idle), keeping heat dissipation and load upon the RiscPC PSU to a minimum. Noise is less than 30dB in normal operation.
Simtec's acclaimed IDE interface is as described above.
Maxtor 40GB hard drive/Interface Pack (HDD, IDE interface, IDE cable, screws): UKP89 inc VAT and carriage
HDD 5.25" mounting/power pack (rails, closed front panel, power splitter, screws): UKP10 inc VAT and carriage
Although you'll have to give us time to work out our 149 times table!
Zip250, 40GB HDD, Interface pack (HDD, Zip250, IDE interface, IDE cable, screws): UKP149 inc VAT and carriage.
5.25" Mounting kits as above.
These offers are strictly limited, and only available whilst current stocks last.
Of course we've been practising our 89 times table for some time. Don't forget:
NET100: 10/100MBit ethernet NIC for RiscPC/A7000: UKP89 inc VAT and carriage
Keyboard controlled switch : To switch between PC/RiscPC: UKP89 inc VAT and carriage (PS2MouseMini required for each RiscPC - UKP18.95 normally, UKP10 with KCS).
We are pleased to announce that the full version of Aemulor, the 26-bit emulator for Iyonix PC is now available from
<URL:http://www.aemulor.com/>, and your local Acorn/RISC OS dealer.
We've taken many suggestions and results of testing from users of the demo version and incorporated these into the full release code.
Features overview:
Aemulor is now fully reentrant, which means 26-bit applications now work within taskwindows, and this also positions Aemulor to run even more applications in the future.
Support for applications that require dynamic areas in "low" memory has been added, as has service call-passing to 26-bit modules.
Finally, we've squeezed even more peformance out of the XScale, with more code optimisations resulting in even faster emulation.
Aemulor is 50UKP+vat from www.aemulor.com or your local Acorn/RISC OS dealer.
There is a purchasing FAQ available from the main website which answers many questions such as methods of payment etc
The compatibility database on the website has been updated to reflect the improved range of applications that the full version supports.
Aemulor will be also on sale at the Wakefield show on Saturday 10th May although please remember to bring your Iyonix PC MAC address with you if you want to buy a copy at the show!
Remane 1.53 is now on my website, url below and follow the link to pd.
The major addition this time round is that you can save your basic setup, which will then be loaded in every time you install the program.
Remane is a bulk renaming/renumbering program particularly useful for large collections of digital photographs.
Remane is shareware.
http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/tudorI've just uploaded the latest beta version of !Google to its website at <URL:http://toolbars.andrewpoole.org.uk/>
The latest version is completely 32bit compliant (I hope:)) and should work on the Iyonix. I've also tested this version with the demo version of Oregano2, and it seems to work.
I hope to put the documentation on the website soon. Support as always is available by emailing andrew@andrewpoole.org.uk
Version 1.25 of this 32/26 bit Home Accounts freeware application is now available from <URL:http://www.ksedwards.ukgateway.net/account2/>.
NEW AND REVISED FEATURES
Each of the exsisting 20 Categories can now have nine sub-categories defined to make it easier to refine your reports and budgetting. The sub-account of the "Master" category displays all sub-category entries.
Memos can now be written to remind you to pay bills etc. (with up to a month's early warning) and a payment reminder window is displayed when you load the account file if any payments are due (similar to Alarms in Organiser).
Moving the cursor to another cell in the main window now automatically saves the cell you left (so at last it is no longer necessary to press return after each entry!).
If a fatal error occurs, Account2 will now attempt to save your work to a scrap file, and warn you when you next start up the application.
<Ctrl-T> now toggles the taxable status of a transaction for easy marking (without the need to have the details window open).
Slight change to category budget setting - The budget amount is now active as soon as it is entered, and the redundant save button has been replaced with an undo button to restore the budget to that when the file was loaded.
HAL26 supports the RISC OS 5 Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL) according to its published specification from RISC OS 3.1 upwards. This allows the programmer easy access to interrupt control, timers and counters in a machine-independent manner. For RISC OS 3.1 only, HAL26 also provides Podule_ReadInfo which permits information about podule hardware to be determined across all RISC OS machines.
Version 0.04 may be downloaded from
http://www.markettos.org.uk/riscos/othersoft.html
(note: HAL26 is not required for, and does not work on, RISC OS 5)
ps2txt 2.1 (22 Feb 1992) is a small command line program to extract text from Postscript files, which has a special mode for Postscript generated from TeX output via DVI. RISC OS 5 compatible. Download from: http://www.markettos.org.uk/riscos/othersoft.html
Greek fonts. A package of outline fonts in Arial, Times and Courier typefaces containing the (Modern) Greek character set. These are designated ISO8859/1 (Latin1) fonts but contain Greek glyphs in the positions they hold in ISO8859/7 (Modern Greek) - this means they can be used in applications that don't understand the use of different character sets. Poly provides polytonic characters which, in conjunction with Times, may be used to typeset Classical, Biblical Greek or Katharevousa. Download from: http://www.markettos.org.uk/riscos/othersoft.html
CryptRandom 0.10, a module for generating cryptographically useful random numbers. Download from:
http://www.markettos.org.uk/riscos/crypto/
SHA1 0.02, a module to compute a Secure Hash Algorithm 1 digest of a block of data. This is a means of reducing a data block to a small number, which can be used to reliably compare large blocks efficiently. Download from: http://www.markettos.org.uk/riscos/crypto/
All RISC OS 5 compatible software is currently untested on Iyonix, so should be considered beta quality on such machines. I should be grateful for comments from anyone who is able to test it.
A new 26/32-bit compatible version of the IClear module is now available for download from my website at
<URL:http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/mfox/software>
This version has been tested on an Iyonix PC and also on an ARM3-powered Acorn A4 to ensure backward-compatibility.
IClear is a module which makes it easier to delete text from a writable icon by double-clicking on the icon and typing new text. This may be found to be more intuitive than typing Ctrl-U.
The module also includes the ArrowDrag feature, allowing objects to be dragged with single-pixel precision by using the mouse buttons and the arrow keys.
IClear will be celebrating its tenth birthday later this year, having been first written and released in 1993.

I have released version 0.31 of Pairs, a computer version of the traditional card-matching game. For those who have not come across this type of game before, the playing area is covered in pairs of picture cards, placed face down. Each player takes it in turns to flip over two cards and look at the pictures. If they match, the cards are removed and the player gets another turn; the winner is the player to have removed the most pairs of cards at the end of the game. In Pairs, the computer is one of the players.
New to this version is the ability to attach sound samples to individual cards, so that they are played when the cards are turned over. I understand that this can make the game more useful in a classroom environment. Pairs uses Rick Hudson's PlayIt to handle the samples.
Pairs is Freeware and is compatible with all versions of RISC OS from 3.1 onwards (including Select and the Iyonix). It can be obtained from the Games section of my website, at
<URL:http://www.stevefryatt.org.uk/software/games/>
An updated version of GraphDraw (now at version 2.65) is available from the following url.
<URL:http://www.graphdraw.riscos.org.uk/>
The main point to note is that GraphDraw is 26/32 bit neutral, and runs on the Iyonix, Select, and any RISC OS >= 3.1.
For those that still do not know about GraphDraw:
GraphDraw allows the entry, and editing, of x,y values, and the data may then be fit to
The resulting graph may be printed via any standard RISC OS printer driver, saved as a draw file, or exported as a MultiPlot file to allow several graphs to be combined.
<URL:http://www.mikejs.com/riscos/amplay.html>
The main download includes the app itself and text documentation. HTML documentation and the (WIMPBasic) source are also available for download. Buttons in several colour schemes are also available.
Also available for download is AMPlayRC, a rudimentary Remote Control application for AMPlay.
Documentation can also be viewed online at;
<URL:http://www.mikejs.com/riscos/amplay/docs/html/index.html>
Being a frontend for the AMPlayer module, you need to have a version of AMPlayer installed on your system. AMPlayer can be downloaded from <URL:http://www.amplayer.org/>.
AMPlayer is not included in the AMPlay download.
Note that AMPlay will not play anything other than the mp3 formats that the AMPlayer module supports.
You will also need !WBModules v2.09 or greater on your system. This can be downloaded from
<URL:http://www.mikejs.com/riscos/wbmodule209.zip>.
I've just uploaded !RiscSearch V0.92 to its homepage at <URL:http://www.riscsearch.de>.
Changes in V0.92:
!RiscSearch is meant to be a meta-search engine, and AFAIK it is the only one available for RISC OS anywhere. It helps you to find web-pages about a certain topic by asking different search engines about the keywords you supply. It collects results from (at the moment) 9 different engines, filters out duplicate matches and then presents all links in a window of your web-browser.
Version 4.4 of my Doom port DIY and version 1.18 of the WAD tool armDeu can now be downloaded from the DIY pages at <URL:http://home.t-online.de/~zarquon/DIY.html>
For a full list of changes read the file UpdateM44 in the DIYDocs directory. The most important changes are:
I've just uploaded !RiscSearch V0.91 to its homepage at <URL:http://www.riscsearch.de>
Changes in V0.91 are:
For all of you, who don't know about !RiscSearch: !RiscSearch is meant to be a meta-search engine, and AFAIK it is the only one available for RISC OS anywhere. It helps you to find web-pages about a certain topic by asking different search engines about the keywords you supply. It collects results from (at the moment) 9 different engines, filters out duplicate matches and then presents all links in a window of your web-browser.
I've just uploaded version 1.05 of DirSync to my website. You can find it at <URL:http://home.c2i.net/jjvdgeer/riscos/> or the dedicated pate at <URL:http://home.c2i.net/jjvdgeer/riscos/dirsync.html>.
New features in this version:
DirSync is a program that allows you to visually compare two directorystructures. There are several ways of filtering the type of differences you want to see (only newer files, only files that exist only in one of the directories and so on). You can mark those files you want to be equal, select the direction of copying, and then synchronise them.
DirSync is almost freeware, but not quite. You must send me a mail that you're using DirSync if you decide to leave it on your harddisc...
I've recently uploaded Verma 0.21 to my site:
<URL:http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/lenny/riscos/soft/index.html>
Verma is a utility that displays detailed information about Modules that are located in memory or on disc.
This release just fixes a couple of bugs that crept into the recent 0.20.
Suitable for use with RISC OS 3.10 - 5, though does require the new 32-bit CLib (AND CallASWI 0.03) on pre-RISC OS 5 machines.
I've recently uploaded Historian 0.18 to my site :
<URL:http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/lenny/riscos/soft/index.html>
Historian allows maintainance of Fresco's history list. It can either be used as a VIX module (for Voyager users), or as a standalone application.
Only minor changes in this version. Mainly recompiled to be 26/32-bit neutral and thus now requires the 32-bit CLib, etc.
I've recently uploaded Syncopath 0.14 to my site :
<URL:http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/lenny/riscos/soft/index.html>
Syncopath is a drive duplication type backup program, acting as a frontend to David Pilling's SyncDiscs utility.
Only minor changes in this version. Mainly recompiled to be 26/32-bit neutral and thus now requires the 32-bit CLib, etc.
I've recently uploaded Mixer 0.20 to my site :
<URL:http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/lenny/riscos/soft/index.html>
Mixer is a utility providing a centralised control of the volume levels of the internal sound system, CD drives and SharedSound handlers (eg PCSound, Synth, Player, etc).
Only minor changes in this version. PlayIt volume scaling and recompiled to be 26/32-bit neutral and thus now requires the 32-bit CLib, etc.
I've recently uploaded Midiphile 0.23 to my site :
<URL:http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/lenny/riscos/soft/index.html>
Midiphile is a utility for use with MIDI files. It can produce a textual description of a MIDI file's contents, or it can be used to remove unwanted MIDI events or just repair some of the more common faults.
This release is just a re-compile to make it 26/32-bit neutral. It thus now requires the 32-bit CLib, etc.
A couple of bug fixes, one of which is a real cracker which slipped through the net :-(
It will handle files and directories dragged to the iconbar for immediate views.
It also includes an editable image details database based on the EXIF tag standard.
Catalogues can be pre-built from a directory(ies) full of images or appended to by dragging from a filer window. Images can also be dragged from a Digiflash window :-) and applications.
It will create an HTML version of a catalogue.
Read-Only sources can be catalogued (including HTML).
New version 1.01 of DDF2Html - Impression->HTML converter.
<URL:http://www.bigfoot.com/~chrisbazley/utilities.htm#ddf2html>
Minor upgrades:
When reprocessing existing HTML files, DDF2Html now tries to display the current page title in the <TITLE> icon instead of the default 'Untitled'. (If you try to edit this value, it will still be ignored in favour of the original title, but you can at least see what the latter is!)
Program now reports an error if new files are dragged to the iconbar during processing, instead of silently ignoring them.
This new version of the archive should also fix any problems encountered by corrupted !Run and !Boot files (the old archive may have contained !Run and !Boot files from the wrong version of the app on my hard disc.)
Alligata Media
Okay, we'll give this one a go. We can release, on or around 14th May 2003, 'First steps with RISC OS 4'; a book presented in simple step-by-step style explaining some of the first things of RISC OS. The presentation is pretty much as a magazine, with step by step guides exploring most aspects of the operating system.
It's an A5 publication, of almost 150 pages incorporating a small colour section and spiral bound cover. Expected retail price would be 12.99 ukp, including UK postage.
Everything simple, many ideas explored - sections [but not the whole book] may be featured in future RISC World magazines. With a superb response to our earlier posting, who'd be interested in that? These are to give us number ideas, and are not binding 'Yes please' votes.
As a secondary issue, would any hardware manufacturer be interested in a version tailored to their machines?
On the 1st March 2003, in a thread on c.s.a.misc (<4bcc69ecd4frank@DELETETHISaaug.net>), I said that revised versions of both the Manual and the Application Note pertaining to !MakeModes would be made available shortly. Shortly is just about here.
In case appropriate persons missed that statement of intent, I am repeating it here in light of the fact that these two documents were originally published as copyright of Acorn Computers Limited in 1994 and to my knowledge have not since been acknowledged by any means.
If anyone wishes to claim copyright and prevent imminent publication of the modified versions, they should contact the under-mentioned shortly.
Thank you for your attention.

This is to announce version 0.68.8
News on this and earlier releases can be seen at:

New for this release:
Heat index
Improved log timing
Alligata Media will shortly be in a position to announce the release of a number of publications for users of RISC OS computers. In some cases, these books - and they are books - are relaunches of existing titles whereby the publishers have lost interest, whereas in other cases they're complete new titles for RISC OS 4 computers and later.
To make this a valid proposition, we need to know interest in titles covering the following subjects:
There are other possibilites, but the titles given above have a very short lead time and as such would be releases within the short term. Each relaunched title COULD be perfect bound, as per their original launch, or spiral bound for somewhat less. Costing estimates between 10ukp and 20ukp depending upon method of publication.
Anybody interested? We're prepared to put the work in, if people want 'em. Let me know.
Pluto is an excellent and very comprehensive mail and news reader, but the documentation does not do it full justice.
This Pluto manual is an attempt to bring all the documentation in to one place, originally based on the Docs files and the History files supplied by Jonathan, but with a great deal of information added culled from Newsgroup messages over the years, plus the experiences of several experienced users.
This has been produced as a StrongHelp manual for Pluto, and it has now been updated to include the additional facilities of Pluto v3
I know that StrongHelp is not everyone's favourite help medium, but for some time there has been available programs from Chris Morison to create contents and index pages, and to convert a StrongHelp manual to a text file. Recently a program from Christian Ludlam and Justin Fletcher has become available to convert StrongHelp to HTML. So I feel that the majority of requirements can be catered for - one will never satisfy everyone!
The manual has a total of over 210 StrongHelp pages, or over 120 A4 text pages.
The StrongHelp manual and a plain text version are now available for download from <URL:http://www.avisoft.force9.co.uk/>
The HTML version should be available shortly.
Additional information and suggestions for changes always welcome! Please help to make this a definitive and complete manual for Pluto.
In addition, the alternative Templates for Pluto have been updated to match v3.03e, and are also available for download.
EXIFinfo, a program to access the information in digital camera images, has been upgraded to version 0.59beta3. Two major enhancements have been made:
Various bugs have also been fixed; our warmest thanks to those who have provided feedback and criticism.
You can get the new version from <URL:http://www.photodesk.iconbar.com>
It is not useful for ordinary JPEGs, processed digicam images, or images of any other format.
This is a beta version of the program, and contains bugs -- some known, many doubtless to be discovered. You use it at your own risk!
As always, feedback is welcome. Send your questions, suggestions, bouquets and brickbats to mailto:photodesk@iconbar.com

I've just put a new version of PDF on my web site
<URL:http://www.pdf.iconbar.com/>
It has the following changes:
!PDF is a PDF (Adobe Acrobat) file viewer for RISC OS.
ROX-Filer 1.3.7 (developer release) is out now!
<URL:http://rox.sourceforge.net/rox_filer.php3>
ROX-Filer is a small, fast, powerful filer for Unix, Linux and compatible systems. Its user interface is based on the RISC OS filer, and it supports similar concepts, such as application directories, drag-and-drop saving and popup menus. It also implements a RISC OS like pinboard, and a panel which can be used in a similar way to the RISC OS iconbar. It also supports many features not found in RISC OS, including thumbnails of images, keyboard short-cuts, many more options, powerful search facilities, etc.
ROX-Filer can be used on its own, with another desktop (such as GNOME, KDE or XFCE), or as the core component of the ROX desktop. The ROX desktop aims to bring all the good features of RISC OS to modern systems. Get ROX-Filer here: (source and Linux-x86 binary archives at present):
<URL:http://rox.sf.net/rox_download.php3>
The filer now requires GTK+-2.0.x or GTK+-2.2.x (which easily alongside Gtk+-1.2):
<URL:http://www.gtk.org/>
Screenshots:
<URL:http://rox.sourceforge.net/index.php3>
<URL:http://rox.sourceforge.net/screenshots.php3>
The filer is distributed under the GNU General Public License, which means that anyone can modify it, use bits of it in their own (GPL) programs, etc. Indeed, many of the improvements made to the filer were added by other ROX users and posted as patches to the mailing list.

OSLib 6.50, which contains all the latest RO5 API calls, plus a few minor bug-fixes is now available for download at
<URL:http://ro-oslib.sourceforge.net>
OSLib is a set of functions and C headers to provide complete coverage of the RISC O S application programmer's interface in C. It provides access from C code to all RISC O S system calls ("SWI's") which is
efficient: often, memory access is completely avoided;
type-safe: every argument can be type-checked by the compiler;
obvious: a SWI is called by the "obvious" syntax;
complete: every SWI is covered;
register-safe: hides (often idiosyncratic) register allocation;
language-independent: although the headers are specific to C, the library is not - any A P C S-conformant language can call it.
This is just to say that I'm in the process of revamping my www.vigay.com web site, which hosts all my Acorn/RISC OS Software, along with Ant Support pages and CSA.* FAQ pages etc.
Most of the pages are no longer served by a CGI script, which means they can be indexed more easily as well as stored offline for reference.
All my RISC OS software is now online at http://www.vigay.com/software (or http://software.vigay.com) and I hope people find the site as easy to navigate as previously.
However, please bear in mind that some pages are still being updated - mainly the ones with large amounts of reference material (such as Ant Support and the RISC OS Academy pages), but I hope to get them all online within the next week or two.
Most of the web site can be reached via one or two clicks from the main www.vigay.com homepage, so you shouldn't have to spend too much time looking for the article you require - and all pages have a little eight button navigation panel at the top, which should take you directly to the main sections.
Also, I've removed restrictions on using inferior Microsoft products to browse the site, so if you're using the inferior and buggy Windows XP you can now regain entry to the entire site without popups, warnings or crashes. :-)
As always, comments and feedback are more than welcome.
Wimpbasic.org is pleased to announce that all of the programs held on our site have now been tested on Aemulor on the Iyonix. 80% of the programs work without any problem, with just over 5% failing to work at all.
For hints and tips, and to find out which programs work on Iyonix pop along to <URL:http://www.wimpbasic.org/> for full details.
For those not in the know Wimpbasic is a programming tool that allows users to develope wimp based programs without an in depth knowledge of how the wimp works.
Wimpbasic.org has been developed to be a central support site for users of Wimpbasic itself and those who use the programs developed. It holds many of the programs that have been written along with other generally useful information.
Wimpbasic.org would still like to hear from developers, who have completed new projects, or have given up but would have some half completed projects.

I've recently uploaded !Verma 0.20 to my site :
<URL:http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/lenny/riscos/soft/index.html>
Verma is a utility that displays detailed information about Modules that are located in memory or on disc. Eg drag !Boot or !System to its icon and it will display details for all modules found there-in. It will also indicate multiple copies of modules (irrespective of their version number).
New in version 0.20:
Suitable for use with RISC OS 3.10 - 5, though does require the new 32-bit CLib on pre-RISC OS 5 machines.
