a) The "Info" window now shows details about a PNG file while being converted
b) It is possible to convert PNG to sprite files & vice-versa from the command line

!Jclean v2.01

29th March 2000

David

New on my Free Stuff page:

http://www.dacha.freeuk.com/free/

!Jclean 2.01

This is a very simple little app giving a desktop presence for the jpegtran command line utility which performs lossless transformations on JPEGs.

Currently, !Jclean only cleans up files, removing comments, embedded thumbnails, etc., to produce baseline JPEGs which are not only often considerably smaller but also less likely to cause problems in RISC OS.

!Jclean options are:

Just drop a JPEG file or selection of files on to the icon bar icon and !Jclean goes through them like a dose of salts.

RISC OS Education mailing list

29th March 2000

dgs

A number of teachers have approached user groups and asked if there is a constructive forum for discussing the use of RISC OS systems in education.

Poking around in various appropriate newsgroups revealed no immediate source of such a forum, but quite a lot of people who were keen to see one started.

ROUGOL has therefore created a mailing list for everyone who is involved in the use of RISC OS systems in education (it's worth emphasising that the list *isn't* just for those in the London area!)

Anything to do with RISC OS, related products, making use of it in education, requests for help, and general discussion on the theme is welcome. Hopefully this will provide a supportive and practical forum, free from the distractions often found in other places.

To join the list, send an email to:
teach-request@rougol.jellybaby.net
with "subscribe teach" in the body of your message.

To post to the list once you've joined, send your article(s) to:
teach@rougol.jellybaby.net

If you have any problems, you can contact us at rougol@jellybaby.net

New ROUGOL URL
While I'm here, I might as well mention that you can now reach the ROUGOL Web site at the following shorter URL:
http://rougol.jellybaby.net/

The Web site holds a variety of information, including details of past and future meetings, links to members' Web sites, information on RISC OS systems, links to a wide range of RISC OS resources, and some information specifically useful to RISC OS users in the London area.

Joining ROUGOL
You don't, of course, have to be a ROUGOL member to use the RISC OS Education mailing list. However, if you're in or vaguely near London, membership is free, and we run a wide range of activities. Contact us as below if you would like to receive details.

If you've contacted us before, but haven't heard anything for a long time, it's possible you've been overlooked, or your email address changed. So please get in touch again.

RiscPCB version 0.42

29th March 2000

Terry Swanborough

Just to let anybody whose interested know that an upgrade to version 0.42 of RiscPCB can now be obtained from the address below.

This upgrade fixes a few bugs see help file for more info it also adds initial support for gerber RS-274 X what this basically means is you don't have to muck around with aperture files, as all the aperture sizes are encoded within the gerber file its self (much nicer :-)

I have tried RS 274X on GCprevue / Preditor / GC-CAM so you should have little problems with your board manufacturer understanding the gerber data.

Hopefully over the next few months I will be adding extra features of RS 274X these include better support of custom graphics.

For those of you that have never heard of RiscPCB here is a short description of what it does.

RiscPCB is a FreeWare printed circuit board designer for Acorn RISC OS computers.

RISCPCB MAIN FEATURES ARE:

!FullNames

25th March 2000

Andrew Booker

Have you upgraded to RISC OS 4?
Have you got lots of directories with long filenames in them?
Would you like to know the full filename of any files which have had their name truncated by the filer just by moving the mouse pointer over the icon?

If so, you need !FullNames. When loaded, if you keep the mouse pointer still over a filer icon with a truncated filename, the full name will be displayed just above the pointer (in a similar way to Windows 95).

!FullNames can be downloaded from
http://www-users.york.ac.uk/~ajb121/fnames.htm

I hope you find it useful,

Schema 2 1.05e available

Clares Micro Supplies Ltd web site now has an Schema 2 update to allow users of version 1.05 to upgrade to 1.05e. This can be found at:

http://www.claresmicro.com/support/schup.html

This update will not work with any other versions. If you have version 1.04, you will need to upgrade for ukp 10.00 plus ukp 3.00 P & P if you want version 1.05e.

The new features which 1.05e has added since 1.05 are:

  1. You can now switch the new style cursor operation off if you wish.
  2. There is now an option to use $ for absolute references instead of @
  3. If you have the ignore empty cell option in array functions switched on, this version regards a cell containing an expression evaluating to "" as empty.
  4. There is a new option in the Cell function. In fact, it's been there since 1.03 but hasn't been documented and has now been extended.
  5. It is now possible to have multiple user macro files. If user macro loading is enabled, any file starting =User in the Auto directory will be loaded.
  6. In the effects and styles menus, you can now set the X and Y sizes independently.
  7. The New View and Discard menus on the icon bar menu now show a * alongside files which have been modified.

21st March 2000

Ferdinand Veldmans

<commercial voice-over>
Did you ever want to make your own dedicated CD database, diary, addressbook or whatever and found that you had to write all these boring data handling functions over and over again? </voice-over>

Topix proudly presents TBase 1.00. TBase is a database engine disguised as a C library. It can handle very large databases (it has been tested up to 1 million records). Retrieval of data is very quick due to the efficient usage of indexes (when available).

Draw to EPS converter release, SESType update

21st March 2000

Peter Hillman

I've updated my RISC-OS homepage at http://www.ee.ed.ac.uk/~pmh/ART/ with Draw2eps, a freeware command line program that produces Encapsulated Postscript files from Drawfiles for import into StarOffice, LaTeX etc.

Platform independent Source code, Windows, and ARMLinux versions are available.

(Graphics and textareas are not supported yet, but if people want it, I'll do it.)

Also I've updated SESType, a freeware typing course, so that the game part section actually works. I also remembered to optimise it this time (oops), so it the whole thing goes a little faster.

Compo Clues and CompoScript

19th March 2000

Jim Lesurf

The upgrade to Version 1.18d of !Compo is now available from http://www.crosswinds.net/~rdavison/compo.htm

This new version represents a major step forward for !Compo, and a significant enhancement of image processing on the RO platform as it now supports 'CompoScript'.

CompoScript is a scripting language which can be use to 'program' Compo to carry out sequences of actions. The language is very flexible and allows the user to add functions and 'automate' actions which can then be applied to multiple files or objects. This makes tasks such as the generation of animations, thumbnails, converting batches of files, etc, much easier than before. It also allows the user to create their own complex customised image manipulation processes. These can then be applied selectively or globally as required.

To help users become familiar with the scripting language the 'Compo Clues' site at http://www.st-and.demon.co.uk/Compo/clues.html now has some pages on CompoScript. These new pages provide some simple example scripts and explain in detail how they work.

More pages will be added in the future when time permits.

RISC OS port CVS 1.10.8 released

18th March 2000

John Tytgat

I've updated the RISC OS port of CVS 1.10. It contains now the current 1.10.8 snapshot of CVS together with a couple of bug fixes. The port version is now 0.17 and can be found at:

<http://gallery.uunet.be/John.Tytgat/cvs/>

For those who don't know yet:

> CVS stands for 'Concurrent Versions System' and is a version control
> system. Using it, you can record the history of your source files
> (e.g. source code of your programs, contents of your web site).
>
> This distribution has two parts: the first one consists of the command
> line based CVS program (!CVS.Bin.cvs) which is more or less a straight
> port from the original CVS 1.10 sources. The second part is a GUI
> program allowing you to use the command line based CVS program in a
> more user friendly way.
>
> More info on CVS can be found at <http://www.cyclic.com/>

Enjoy, and don't forget to give user feedback.

!Telephone v.3 and Zmac 1.2a1 released

16th March 2000

Matthew Phillips

The following new or revised applications are available from my software downloads page at http://users.ox.ac.uk/~chri0264/software/

Telephone v.3
A revised version of my application to provide telephone dialling facilities from Impact-3 for those whose modem is not connected to the standard serial port. Thanks to Des Fry for spotting some mistakes in the previous releases.

Zmac 1.2a1
This is a RISC OS version of Zmac 1.2, the Z80 macro cross-assembler being maintained by Mark Rison. The RISC OS version features a desktop front end, requiring the FrontEnd module and DDEUtils as supplied with Acorn C/C++, but can be used from the command line if these are not available.

Interactive help and a help file are included, along with the original C source and documentation.

Of particular interest to Amstrad CPC users is the fact that Zmac is highly compatible with MAXAM, and can produce binary files with AMSDOS headers.

The first version of Zmac was written in 1978, and has finally made it to Acorn machines 22 years later...

ROX-Filer 0.1.17

16th March 2000

Thomas Leonard

The latest release of ROX-Filer, a RISC OS style filer for Unix/Linux is now available.

Changes since the last announcement here:

ROX-Filer is the core component of the ROX desktop.

The ROX desktop aims to provide a RISC OS style GUI on Unix/Linux machines. Currently the filer is mostly finished and the desktop already supports drag-and-drop loading and saving, application directories and an icon bar. The desktop is stable and fully usable - I have been using it as my only desktop for several months now without problems.

The ROX homepage is at: <http://www.ecs.soton.ac.uk/~tal197/rox.php3>

There is also a mailing list; to subscribe, send an email to: <rox-request@ecs.soton.ac.uk> with the single line 'subscribe' as the body.

The list is not just for developers but for anyone who wants help installing or using ROX, suggestions for new features, announcements of new releases or for people who are thinking of trying it one day...

The desktop is distributed under the GNU General Public License, which means that anyone can modify it, use bits of it in their own (GPL) programs, etc. Indeed, many of the improvements listed above were added by other ROX users and posted as patches to the mailing list.

Enjoy,

Thomas Leonard

Rheingold Enterprises

14th March 2000

Alan Wrigley

This is just a brief post to announce that Rheingold Enterprises has ceased trading. Although we haven't published any software in our own name for quite a while now, we have developed applications for other publishers (e.g. R-Comp) and we have been very active behind the scenes undertaking contract work on the RISC OS platform for several major companies.

However, the time has now come to join the brain drain to Silicon Valley. I will personally continue to support to the best of my ability any software I have written, within the limitations of what little free time I have available, and I don't rule out returning to the platform at some point in the future if a market still exists.

TBA Software are to cease trading

13th March 2000

Martin Piper

From today, 13 March 2000, TBA Software will cease trading. All software development has finished and no further orders will be received or dispatched. It has been a fun few years in the Acorn community and we all have fond memories of past events. We are planning to release a lot of the source code developed for our games and tools into the public domain. The Web site will host all this data until the domains expire in about one year and an announcement will be posted when this is ready for download.

!NumberFix 1.5

11th March 2000

Jochen Lueg

NumberFix is a utility that help to manipulate numeric files - typically image files from one of Spacetech's cameras.

You can for instance change files that are called '1', '2', '3' into '01','02,'03' - so that the filer sorts them correctly. You can also renumber your files to start from a higher or lower base number, so that they can be combines in a single directory.

So far NumberFix has only been able to handle files that were already numeric. This version has a new button which will renumber any selection of files. This makes it possible to convert PC derived files.

NumberFix is shareware. £10 donated to the computer kitty in Limavady College will not only enhance my kudos with the students, but also entitle you to use any of my programs.

All the best

Support for Morley's Acorn/RISC OS Products

10th March 2000

Gary Partis

On the 9th March 2000, Dr Jason Pia, Managing Director of Morley Electronic Systems Ltd, has given Partis Computing the 'go ahead' to take over the support and development of their 32bit Acorn/RISC OS products.

This includes Morley SCSI, Revolution CDROM system, ST509 hard disc interface and the Analogue/User/Midi interface.

If you have a Morley SCSI card, you may upgrade your software and firmware via a Partis Computing PowerROM, which will give extra functionality (including support for newer processors and operating systems), and extra performance with file system access. This is available from us at 35 UKP plus 2 UKP package and posting. See our Web site for more details.

If you have a Revolution CDROM system, a ST509 hard disc interface or a Analogue/User/Midi interface, there are currently no upgrades as the existing system will work on all processors and operating systems.

New Delirium Saver Pack

9th March 2000

Joe Oldak

Two updates in the same year? Wow! Those Kulture kids have really excelled themselves this time!

A new saver pack, imaginatively called "Saver Pack 3", has just been released for Delirium.

Get your copy from: http://www.various-artists.freeserve.co.uk/delirium/

For those that don't know, Delirium is a screen saver system for high-spec Acorns. Unusually for a screen saver, it contains top quality "demo" style effects. If you want starfields and sliding blocks then DON'T download Delirium. If you want effects which push your StrongARM and VRAM to the limit, then Delirium is for you!

Delirium won't work on anything pre-RISC OS 3.5. It will, however, work on RISC OS 4.

As well as having fancy effects, it also has stacks of other features:

Thanks

AntUtils v1.36 now available

9th March 2000

Paul Vigay

I've just uploaded AntUtils version 1.36 onto my web site. It fixes the bug that crept into v1.35 where you could occasionally get an error on initialisation.

I've added the facility to quit on other applications instead of just InetSuite (the default) so that Voyager users can tell it to quit with Fresco for instance.

I've also added the initial stages of a dynamic area manager to try and diagnose possible Fresco problems. If Fresco crashes unexpectedly and leaves its dynamic area behind, AntUtils now provides an additional option on the Fresco menu to delete the dynamic area - even after Fresco has quit. It will also attempt to patch the dynamic area so that corrupted bytes don't get left behind. I hope to improve upon this in future versions.

Registered users should also download a new !Advanced plugin, as the new features have corresponding advanced configuration options.

Please enjoy - and don't forget that an AntUtils mailing list is available. Just email antutils@vigay.com with the subject "Subscribe" (or "Unsubscribe").

AddressIt now available from R-Comp

9th March 2000

R-Comp

R-Comp is pleased to announce that AddressIt, the excellent Post Code and Address finder previously developed by Fabis, is now available in a revised form.

The main changes in the new R-Comp version of the software are the removal of the 12 month expiry on use, and a dramatic cut in price.

AddressIt is supplied on CD and costs 99 ukp. It works alongside all main RISC OS business software such as Impression, Prophet, Ovation Pro, Easi/Techwriter, FireWorkz, PipeDream etc.

Existing owners of the time-expired version of AddressIt can renew their "subscription" and move to the non-expiry version for 50ukp (half the price of the old "yearly subscription").

This really is a product that no business can be without - having easy, quick access to country-wide address information is a huge time saving and the extra accuracy gained is invaluable. Let's just say that it has revolutionised the R-Comp admin here!

For more information, check out http://www.rcomp.co.uk/

WebProxy 0.062 released...

9th March 2000

Alex Macfarlane Smith

Well, it's actually referred to as WebProxy 0.061 on the site, but never mind.

http://www.toth.org.uk/~aardvark/

This is a beta release of my updated WebProxy program - it now has a nicer frontend and stuff, so should hopefully work better/be easier to use than 0.04. So if you're interested in this, download it and give it a try, and report back to me any bugs you've found, and if you'd be interested in seeing it developed further.

Note that the re-direction URL doesn't seem to be working, so if it doesn't, try connecting to http://vs20-382874a3.dsvr.co.uk/ directly.

Updated databse for !Eurocalc

8th March 2000

Wim Ekels

For those that use our !eurocalc application as was publicised on the Goldline disc from Abacus:

As a service to you all we have uploaded a updated database of currencies to our second homepage at: http://home.wxs.nl/~ekels.zandvoort

You can come there too by following the 'acorn' link on the bottem left on our main site: http://www.ekels.nl

For those that don't know !eurocalc:
!eurocalc is a multi currency calculator that calculates all 'euro' currencies and the euro into each other at the same time. For convenience you can add 4 extra currencies from outside 'eurocountry'.

In the somehow crippled version on the Goldline disc the pound is added in the database, but you cannot change the value ;-)

This version can be downloaded from the mentioned site too.

If you actually use !eurocalc we would like to hear from you! If there is demand we could change !eurocalc, but up to now everyone who uses it seems to be satisfied...

We are now finding it increasingly difficult to increase in the rankings as we get nearer the top. For instance, we were at 71st position for 11 days and 72nd position for 19 days. We need to recruit more members to our team to help us get up the charts as quick as we can!

Anyone with any 32 bit computer can help the team.

All it requires is for a program to be installed which works in your computer's spare time.

Joining the AUG Team
Please see http://www.acornusers.org/rc5/ for information on this worldwide contest in which you will be promoting the name of our platform and could win yourself $1000.

Thank you.

All the best,

EasyClip 2.10b released

6th March 2000

R-Comp

Following R-Comp's acquisition of EasyClip 2 from Fabis earlier this year, we are pleased to announce the release of EasyClip 2.10b which adds numerous enhancements to the product including keyboard shortcuts and other keyboard entry enhancements, much improved online help systems, user interface improvements and various bug fixes.

This update has been developed in house at R-Comp, and as such is indicative of the level of support and commitment we have to the EasyClip 2 product.

This update has been emailed out to all registered EasyClip 2.05 (the previous R-Comp version) users. However, not everyone included email details when upgrading, so if you haven't received v2.10b and think you should have done, give it 24 hours, then please get in touch with us.

If you still have the Fabis version of EasyClip 2 and have not upgraded to the R-Comp release, the cost is just 7ukp to cover the admin and development overheads which come with us taking the new product. Upgrades from EasyClip 1 cost 15ukp.

For new users, EasyClip 2.10b is available for just 25ukp.

R-Comp and EasyClip
Some of our traditional customers have asked us about how EasyClip fits into the R-Comp range of Internet and web products. The answer is in the way we use it here - to catalogue and organize web images, buttons, backgrounds, logos and other graphical resources in a single, centralised, WYSIWYG fashion. This is particularly useful if you are developing multiple web sites, where you can store all artwork pertaining to each site in separate EasyClip sections, making managing and maintaining much easier. If you are running a business, it is also extremely useful to be able to store business logos and illustrations alongside web images, all in one convenient location.

Packdisc v0.12Beta

5th March 2000

Patrick Mortara

Hello!

Do you remember the disc-optimising program !Packdisc, written by Steve Lee? I've taken over the development and just added a small frontend. Anyone who is interested can contact me for gaining v0.12Beta of !packdisc for beta-testing! I will also upload the program to my homepage in a week or two!

Packdisc tries to optimise a directory path on your harddisc to free some amount of wasted space! On a big Harddisc it can free several MBs, depending on the amount of small files there! (the more small files, the more space can be saved!) Using it on a directory like !Newsdir (for !newsbase users) can really gain you a lot of extra free space on your Harddisc!

DiffBin: binary file compare

5th March 2000

C. D. Wright

Announcing the release of !DiffBin.
Quoting from the !Help file ...

> DiffBin - binary file compare.
> (C)2000 - C.D.Wright

> DiffBin reads two binary files, comparing them bytewise.
> Upon finding a difference it reports the offsets into the
> two files and attempts to resynchronise. It does this by
> finding small pieces that can be excised from each, up to
> a total over both files of <matchlimit> bytes, to leave
> the next <syncsize> bytes identical. The sizes removed
> are also reported.

This software is deemed to be "ThanksWare". If you use it at all, please let me know. Suggestions for improvements will be considered, especially if accompanied by suitable code. Please do not distribute altered versions.

Archimedes Logo Extensions

5th March 2000

Martin Longley

Logo Xtras and Symmetry Logo

Logo Xtras and Symmetry Logo both require Archimedes Logo from Logotron.

Logo Xtras adds extra features such as:

  • repositioning the origin so that it is not always in the centre of the screen
  • adding the axes and/or a grid
  • colouring in using the mouse
  • adding text in any size
  • changing palettes
  • saving and loading a position even if procedures have not been used
  • printing to Epson printers (and Integrex 123)
  • the option to invert black and white when saving the screen as a sprite for printing
  • and much more ....
  • It also fixes the 'rounding error' errors when positioned near the origin.

Symmetry Logo adds all of the above and additionally:

  • allows up to 4 mirrors to be places anywhere on the screen so that the drawing is reflected in them
  • allows rotational symmetry (up to 31) to be set
  • contains a program for designing a tile which can then be tessellated on to the whole screen in a variety of different ways
  • They can be downloaded from: www.argonet.co.uk/users/lexicon1

There is also a manual for Symmetry Logo in Ovation Pro format. The manual for Logo Xtras will be added soon and hopefully both will be changed to PDF format.

    CD Lock

    5th March 2000

    Martin Longley

CDLock is a simple utility that 'locks' the CD ROM drive to prevent a CD ROM being removed. It was originally created for schools who wanted to put a CD ROM in a computer in the library and ensure that it was not removed.

There are versions for A7000/RPC, Oscar drives connected through the parallel port and 'others'. The program is the same in each case - it is simply the setting up that is different.

It can be downloaded from: www.argonet.co.uk/users/lexicon1

    !Flash 0.49b

    4th March 2000

    Leo Smiers

This second release of !Flash contains a few minor fixes to the previous release. The fixes are:

!Flash is a plugin for web browsers that enables you to view flash files. Many commercial sites use this format to make their site more attractive. Besides showing nice pictures and clips the flash object also allows you to navigate through a site, therefore, without the right plugin it was most times impossible to get past the "Get Shockwave" logo while running a web browser. Although we now have the capability to view flash files not all sites will allow us to enter because they test for other required features or do not detect the !Flash plugin.

I would like to thank all of you who mailed me with bug reports, suggestions or just to tell me that you succeeded in using !Flash.

You can download !Flash 0.49b as usual from my Web site http://people.a2000.nl/lsmiers

4QD www site: RISC OS section

    3rd March 2000

    Richard Torrens

We have just opened a new 'Front Page' for our RISC OS section.

    http://4qd.co.uk/ro/

This seems needed because 4QD are now hosting:

There are other bits and pieces too.

If anyone is interested in electronics, we have a widely respected and large site on the subject which attracts many visitors world wide. I have been doing what I can to help to use this to promote RISC OS awareness and will hopefully be doing more. Suggestions in this respect are welcome.

Our main product (motor controllers) is unlikely to be of much interest to anyone here!

    RISC User Nutshell CD

    2nd March 2000

    Mike Williams

In the February issue of Acorn Publisher we mentioned in our news pages a CD available from Beebug Ltd called RISC User in a Nutshell. In referring to this we quoted a price of GBP25 without making it clear that this applied to RISC User subscribers only. For non subscribers the price is GBP35 (inclusive of VAT, post & packing - non UK add an extra GBP1.00). Our apologies for any inconvenience. Beebug are on 01727 840303 or email sales@beebug.co.uk.
