Enigma 1.32 released

Version 1.32 of !Enigma has just been released and can be downloaded freely from:

There are some bugfixes in this version related to the serial port that prevented it from starting on some machines. There is also a little new feature and some example files on the website.

!Enigma is a realistic simulation of the war-time coding machine used by the Germans to encrypt their messages. It simulates all known variants of the Enigma very acurately and is to date the most complete Enigma Simulator on any platform. Smooth animated graphics and sound.

32 bit RISC OS Samba Server

This is a straight recompile of 0.07a to be 32 bit compatible. It has been tested by others on RISC OS 5.

In other news, I've started looking at porting the 2.2.7 Samba sources since !smbserver is based on really old Samba code. I have no timescales for this work at present.

RiscPCB Version 0.47 (32 bit)

Just to let anybody who's interested know that an upgrade to version 0.47 of RiscPCB can now be obtained from the address below.

This upgrade will work on any version in the 0.4x range. If you have an earlier version download version 0.40 and then apply the upgrade. Please Note you may have to reset the colour setting when upgrading from version 0.40

Could anyone that is currently using or are going to use RiscPCB send me an Email to terry@idealist.demon.co.uk I am trying to get some idea of the user base for RiscPCB its very hard to gauge this when you are giving the program away.

The main reason for this release is 32 bit compatibility but as usual there are a few bug fixes :-)

DirSync, a directory synchroniser

I am proud to announce the result of many hours of programming: DirSync. This is a program to compare two directories. The result is presented in a window where you can filter some type of differences, for example only different files, or only files that are newer in the source directory.

In the compare window are icons to manipulate the synchronise direction, and if they should be synchronised at all. If you've changed these things to your satisfaction, you can press the "Synchronise" button and the synchronising will commence.

It is also possible to start a file-difference viewer from the compare files.

Although there are some other programs that synchronise two directories, this is, to my knowledge, the first one to allow you to see the differences in the way DirSync does. In fact this feature is one of the most important ones for me. I often use DirSync myself just to compare two directorystructures, not even to synchronise them.

DirSync is almost freeware, but not quite. You must send me a mail that you're using DirSync if you decide to leave it on your harddisc. Well, that's not too much to ask, now is it?

Arcane Filing Systems
In a pique of creativity, I made an attempt to put all OS objects into genuine filing systems that I could find. To this end I present AppFS, DAFS, ModFS and VarFS available for download from my website at:

They're officially registered filing system numbers and 32 bit compatible. Although I admit they're largely of curiousity value, they could be gainfully used by sharing via ShareFS on a remote machine, and provide an alternative way of getting these things into an editor (e.g. F2 and type modfs:zap or varfs:inet.path).

There are a couple of immediate shortcomings at present: subdirectories for multiply instantiated modules don't work (I just haven't bothered coding it yet, maybe I shouldn't bother?) and system variables often produce multiple root directories.

Any comments welcome.

I find this very useful for detecting duplicate photographs. I have also added interactive help and re-designed the user interface a bit.

FilerHRun A simple module that provides an alternative command to Filer_Run which is much better suited to some tasks than Filer_Run itself is. The module provides *IfTask and *IfNTask commands which can be used to execute a command if a named task is (or is not) running. It also provides *KillTask and *KillAllTask which will kill one/all tasks which match the the task name.

The main function of FilerHRun is, however, to provide an alternative to Filer_Run. Specifically, FilerHRun has the following advantages over Filer_Run:

FilerHRun is ideal for starting tasks, eg.

WebMan (version 0.06, 20 Jan 2003, 40K)
Webman is a simple, clean, fast tool to help with the management of websites. Specifically, WebMan maintains a database that represents files present on the (remote) website and can compare that against the local copy of the site in order to work out what operations (uploads, deletions, etc.) are required to make the remote site up to date with respect to the local copy. As a bonus, output may be in the form of a command script to throw at sFTP. This allows website maintenance to be handled by simply running obeyfiles to upload changes and acknowledge than an upload succeeded.

I have compiled a release version of the Inform compiler for 32bit versions of RISC OS, it will also run on RISC OS 3.00 or above if the 32bit SharedCLibrary is loaded.

This release does not replace the 26bit version of the compiler release which is still available from the ifarchive.

Loading a 32bpp sprite will search for alpha (mask) information embedded and if it is found, use it.

Masking - see below for details.

Bugfix: Original and Variation could be one step out from where they were supposed to be in certain circumstances.

Bugfix: Creating a GIF animation now recognises the state of the "loop" option, and makes a looping gif if its on.

"Original and Variation" and "Animation" modes now update the thumbnails a bit faster than they did in 0.16.

"Filter" is slightly faster in 0.17 than it was in 0.16

Removed non-functional "compare" and "undo" from the menu (until they do something).

Reorganised filters. These are now stored in the text file !Variations.Filters0

The format of this file should be easy enough to work out and with care you can now modify the inbuilt set of filters yourself.

Two more filters added - 9x9 and 11x11 box filters for fuzzier smudged effects.

Major new function: Masking

Most of Variations effects can now be controlled on a pixel-by-pixel basis by creating a "mask". Simple mask editing tools (circular and angled fills, antialiased airbrush) are fully functional and more tools are planned.

The mask is also offered up to my PCA plugin system and users with PCA sprite tools may find them useful for editing masks too.

RISC OS 26-bit / 32-bit compatible port of CVS

The very latest CVS 1.11.5 client source code got ported to a 26-bit / 32-bit compatible RISC OS binary which can run on RISC OS 3.1 machines until the very latest RISC OS 5 machines.

Freeze sources

Following on from the recent thread in csa.apps I am pleased to announce that the Freeze sources are now available for download from my website.

In addition, GUS has provided me with a copy of the latest release of Freeze (1.60) which is also available from the same page.

For those who don't know, Freeze is a machine state snapper and restorer for RISC OS. Freeze can save the state of a machine and reload it at any time. Using Freeze, an overloaded boot sequence can take less than 5 seconds.

It was written and maintained by Kostas "GUS" Proitsakis but sadly he has now left the RISC OS scene. He has kindly agreed to donate the sources to Freeze to the general community, in the hope that it will eventually be able to run on the new generation of RISC OS machines.

NEW AND REVISED FEATURES
Now utilises Version 3.20 of Martin Avison's ArmSort, so is now 32 bit compatible.

Number of maximum transactions can be set by the user.

Automatic transfers and individual manual entries can be marked to show that they are Taxable Income or Tax deductable expenses.

Reports on taxable income/expenses can be generated to help calculate tax liability. A report on Automatic tranfers can be created.

A Transaction Details window can be opened to get more information about transactions.

Improvement to date input. Year can now be entered using the "quick" input method. On error, the previously shown date is returned immediately.

FIXED
Any automatic transfers which have not been "seen" by the end of December are no longer lost when the file is first loaded in January.

Write cursor positioning in main windows is now more accurate (middle of "write pointer" is active; not the top).

If faster redraw is selected, a copied transaction is now pasted in the correct place.

Some file loading and file linking problems in v.1.24 have been corrected.

Batch renaming program

"!Remane" is a batch renaming program. Once you drop a selection of files onto the window you can rename them in many imaginative ways. There is a choice of file names. Either todays date or the date stamp of the individual files - very useful for photographs - or any other name you can think of. You can add an extension of any kind or length always assuming that you use RISCOS 4 or 5 or anything that can handle long file names.

A text icon displays a running example but there is a pre-view facility that shows the final filenames before you change them for good - unless you use the undo button which will return all files to their original names.

To give an example:

Say you have a directory full of files called 01,02,03 and so on to 50. You now decide to call them all by todays date with a double ~~ separator, for numbers starting from 120 and an extension /jpg. A few clicks of the mouse and you end up with 2003-01-20~~120/jpg, 2003-01-20~~120/jpg, 2003-01-20~~121/jpg to 2003-01-20~~170/jpg.

If your files are called 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11 and so on and are hence not in alphabetical order, this can be fixed with the '1 to 01' button which will add up to three leading 0s.

If you simply want numbered files with an extension and nothing extra, this is just as easy. I find the program invaluable in naming photographs.

!Remane is the successor to !NumberFix which I will not develop any further. Anyone registered for !NumberFix is automatically registered for !Remane.

Remane works best on machines that can handle long file names, like RISC OS 4, but it should also work on other machines as long as you keep the names short. At the moment it does not detect long file name.

Registration is ten pound. 15 pound will register you for all my software.

NetWatch 1.63 available (32bit)

It's still version 1.63 hasn't changed, expect for a very small bug. (it was possible to scroll the main window (not the pane) ) This is also removed in the 26 bit version. But it wasn't worthy enough to increment the version number...

For people who don't know what NetWatch is:

NetWatch is a program which keeps up with changes on the internet. The user has to mark the pages of his interest. NetWatch will fetch these pages at defined intervals and calculate a checksum (MD5). This checksum is compared with the store checksum of the page. When these checksum aren't the same the page has changed and NetWatch will warn the user.

It's also possible to download something with NetWatch and when the download gets aborted for some reason, NetWatch is able to resume the download! (At least when the server is able to do)

ROX-Filer 1.3.6 (developer release) is out now! This version should be pretty stable.

ROX-Filer is a small, fast, powerful filer for Unix, Linux and compatible systems. Its user interface is based on the RISC OS filer, and it supports similar concepts, such as application directories, drag-and-drop saving and popup menus. It also implements a RISC OS like pinboard, and a panel which can be used in a similar way to the RISC OS iconbar. It also supports many features not found in RISC OS, including thumbnails of images, keyboard short-cuts, many more options, powerful search facilities, etc.

ROX-Filer can be used on its own, with another desktop (such as GNOME, KDE or XFCE), or as the core component of the ROX desktop. The ROX desktop aims to bring all the good features of RISC OS to modern systems. Get ROX-Filer here: (source and Linux-x86 binary archives at present):

Versions are 9.12DA and 9.12SH and are functionally-identical. The former (using dynamic areas for memory management) is compatible with RISC OS versions 3.5 to 4.33 (and probably v.5 on the Iyonix, although there has not been an opportunity to test this). 9.12SH uses a 32-bit compatible version of the sliding-heap module for memory management and is compatible with RISC OS 3.1, as well as with later versions.

Powerbase can be used to create databases of information of almost any kind and provides powerful facilities for maintaining such databases and for selectively retrieving and printing information from them. Using Powerbase at an elementary level is particularly easy - you can, for example, set up a simple address-book database in a matter of minutes - yet the needs of more advanced users have not been neglected. Descriptions of Powerbase from various sources have sometimes implied that it is a relational database. It isn't, but it can provide you with some of the facilities which fall outside the sphere of a simple flat-file (card index) type of database and for which a relational database program might otherwise be necessary.

It is best described as a flat-file database with table-validation. This means that text fields within the database can be linked to a list of items in such a way that the field will not accept items unless they are on the list. That list (called a validation table) can have many additional columns providing extra information which may be included in printed reports from the database if required.

Why use !BackBoot ...

Opening a directory for the first time can be slow, as the filer boots all the !applications inside. One way round this is to Filer_Boot the contents of these directories when the computer starts, but this means that your boot sequence takes ages!

BackBoot waits until the computer hasn't been used for ten seconds and then starts booting directories. As soon as you click with the mouse or press a key, BackBoot stops and waits for another ten seconds.

Announcing !ArmSort v3.20 ...

The only change is ...

ArmSort is a module which implements a *Sort command which provides BASIC programmers with very easy and fast facilities for sorting arrays.

ArmSort caters automatically for ANY number of ANY type of single or multiple dimension BASIC array, in ANY combination of Integer, String or Floating Point arrays, in ANY key sequence. It also has flexible parameters and comprehensive error checking. ArmSort is VERY fast, using the Shell Sort technique in ARM Machine Code, and it is therefore very capable of complex sorts on the large data volumes that RISC OS computers are able to hold and process.

A simple command

will sort all 3 arrays together as one 'sort key'.

On a SA203Mhz this can take about 28 seconds for 50,000 elements. An Iyonix takes about 10 seconds for the same sort!

TimerMod is a module providing microsecond resolution timing facilities on 26bit and 32bit machines. It provides *commands and SWI's which can be used measure time intervals, and a microsecond version of the monotonic timer.

Text file output uses a simple C-like format based on the equivalent OSLib (v6.40) header definitions.

!VECstat version 1.02

It contains a fix to preserve the flags returned by earlier vector claimants. This prevents problems with accented characters being entered while !VECstat is active.

Programmers should note that InsV, CmpV and RemV return information in the PSR flags, so this is one of the few places in RISC OS where the flags should be preserved across the call.

!VECstat monitors calls to system vectors with reason code display, for the entire machine or selected tasks. Its is the companion application to !SWIstat, !SERVstat and !APPstat which monitor SWI calls, module service calls, and application events/timings respectively.

RSS is a little application which began life as a test or example of the use of the ParseXML module. Over the past few days it has grown up a little and gained a decent icon. RSS is able to parse RSS feeds from sites providing news and information in that manner. Such sites include Slashdot, Drobe, The Iconbar, and riscos.org as well as many other non-computer based sites.

Background
ConfiX is a universal configuration utility that can be used by 3rd party applications to maintain its Choices files.

It is used by most of our own applications and also by a number of ather apps, such as Oregano 2. No licence fee is required to use ConfiX in your own application. ConfiX should be placed inside !Boot.Resources and can easily link to its web page.

Changes
New in this version are some bugfixes as well as a number of newly implemented object types, such as IP addresses. A full API is now available in PDF format, should you want to try it out.

!CCres is a new application for converting Toolbox Res files (fae) to and from text format. It can be run from the command line, or as a wimp application.

Text file output uses a simple C-like format based on the equivalent OSLib header definitions.

Some possible uses include...

Open source EPSON Stylus Color 580 Printer Dumper

I just put my new Printer Dumper incl. Sources on my homepage. The dumper has been written to allow printing on EPSON Stylus Color 580 because I didn't found an according Dumper between the usual PDumper/Driver/PDFs supplied with RISC OS.

It is likely that the dumper is also working with the EPSON Stylus Color 480, C-20 and C-40. The dumper is also relativ flexible so it might be possible to adapt it for other printers simply by changing the PDF. Because it is open source it can be used as base for adaption of more different printers too. Indeed I am seeing it as an example how to write RISC OS printer drivers using C.

The dumper is still a bit slow and the colours on my printer are not so good as I would like it. But this seems to be a problem of the ink catridge I am using in the monent which is simply more blue than cyan and more violett than magenta :-(. Perhaps other person are making better expierences.

Note that the dumper is using a Module name and a Dumper number which are not registered. If this number/name should be registered by other dumpers I have to change it of course immediately.

Note also that there are problems to use an EPSON Stylus Color 580 under RISCOS because the sequences to change the ink catridges are not documented by EPSON. You unfortunately always need a PC or a person which is an owner of PC to change the ink catridges.

!DrW2HTML 3.70b has been released to fix a buglet whereby the < and > characters were not coverted correctly. Users will now be able to make more sense of certain sections of the DrWimp textmanual, HTML version :-)

DrW2HTML takes the textmanual of DrWimp and converts it to an HTML manual complete with internal links. This version allows for some slight changes in the textmanual of DrWimp 3.70.
