NewsStats - displays news statistics

27th January 2002

Matthew Somerville

NewsStats 1.01
<http://www.dracos.co.uk/riscos/programs/newsstats/>

This RISC OS PHP script runs in your web browser and gives lists of the top N posters to your currently subscribed newsgroups, based on the current contents of your message server. It can restrict the search to certain newsgroups, only include posts by certain posters, collate all the information together in one list or display it per newsgroup, and can output graphs of posting times.

Requirements
You must be using NewsBase or MsgServe (the message server that comes with Messenger Pro) to store your news, and you must be using NewsHound to fetch your news. Otherwise, NewsStats cannot find the files it uses.

You must also have WebJames and PHP installed (or the version of WebJames with PHP built in - I recommend this, as it significantly speeds up PHP files). These are available from <http://www.alexwaugh.com/internet/>.

Example search
To display the current top 30 posters to the comp.sys.acorn newsgroups:

Results per newsgroup: 30
Only match groups containing: comp.sys.acorn
Collate results? Ticked

Bugfix version of Infozip 3

27th January 2002

Harriet Bazley

The major rewrite of Infozip 3 released last autumn inevitably contained a fresh crop of bugs, mostly related to the all-new window redraw code!

A debugged version is now available - in addition there is one significant change. The new-style window (with 'internal path pane') can now be configured *off* if desired, imitating the old behaviour.

ROX-Filer 1.1.12

26th January 2002

Thomas Leonard

NEW RELEASE
New filer release - 1.1.12 is on the web now (source and Linux-x86 binary archives at present):

http://rox.sf.net/rox_download.php3

It's mainly bug fixes this time. The filer is now in feature-freeze until 1.2.0. Please test it thoroughly!

Since there are no known bugs at this time, this is a stable release candidate. Hopefully, we can catch most of the remaining bugs before the stable release!

Changes since 1.1.11:

Internationalisation

Bugfixes

BACKGROUND
ROX-Filer is a graphical file manager for Unix/Linux which provides a RISC OS-like interface. It is also the core component of the ROX desktop; a RISC OS-like desktop for Unix/Linux.

The filer is distributed under the GNU General Public License, which means that anyone can modify it, use bits of it in their own (GPL) programs, etc. Indeed, many of the improvements made to the filer were added by other ROX users and posted as patches to the mailing list.

The filer comes with translations for Dutch, French, German, Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Russian and Spanish.

ADDRESSES
There are installation and getting started guides available. The getting started guide has lots of screenshots and may be interesting to people thinking of trying ROX, or wondering what it looks like.

ArcCommand (game) build 95 released

26th January 2002

Jason Tribbeck

After a brief delay, the latest version of ArcCommand has been released, along with a newly designed set of pages.

ArcCommand is a play-alike version of the Starship Command game by Peter Irvin, but written for today's machines.

If you've never come across ArcCommand (or even Starship Command) before, then it's a game set in deep space, where the object is to destroy as many enemy ships in the vicinity before your energy expires. You have an escape pod which you have to launch in order to continue with another ship (assuming you can impress your bosses!).

It is available from http://www.tribbeck.com/arccmd/, and is freeware.

Note that the online highscore section has not been done yet, and will be completed once I'm sure that it can't be easily broken!

New versions of GedcomWeb and Prune

26th January 2002

Hilary Phillips

My two programs for genealogists have been improved and GedcomWeb 2.04 and Prune 1.02 are now available from

http://www.sinenomine.freeserve.co.uk/software/

Improvements over previously announced versions include:

GedcomWeb:

Prune:

GedcomWeb converts GEDCOM files (as exported from Family, Roots, Ancestor etc.) into JavaScript-based Web pages. Even if you don't want to display your family tree on the Web, the output is still very useful for sending to relations who may not have genealogy software, as it will work with any modern web browser on any type of computer. It's also very handy for printing family trees.

Prune is a program to cut out parts of GEDCOM files. It was designed for use in conjunction with GedcomWeb, to enable you to cut out living people (or disreputable ancestors) from your family tree before publishing the information on the World Wide Web. It is also useful for pruning GEDCOM files which your relations send you, to cut out people from their tree who are no relation of yours.

DGen and SMSPlus updated

23rd January 2002

David McEwen

I have just uploaded updated versions of both DGen and SMSPlus to my website.

DGen is a Sega Megadrive emulator, one of only 2 available on the platform, and currently the fastest. SMSPlus is a Sega Master System and Game Gear emulator. It has pretty decent sound and a pretty good compatibility rate.

This release of DGen is a beta one as compatibility may have been reduced. However there are a number of significant improvements in this build. Most notably the speed. Many games are now very playable. I get around 30fps in Sonic 1, however with a Kinetic this goes up around 40+. So those with such hardware should find things very playbale. Another improvement is that saving and loading of state has been added -> however it is a bit buggy and it is recommended you read the !Help file before trying it. The graphical emulation has also been improved by using a different renderer. Instead of the tile based one used before this beta uses Dave's line renderer, which provides a better representation.

It is certainly a worthwhile download. The old version is available if you wish to compare, or some game doesn't work in this version.

Note since this has been built with the latest GCC you will need the SharedULib module. This is also downloadable from my site, as other projects will require it as they are released.

The update to SMSPlus is much less significant. It basically fixes the lack of sound in the previous build. There are various internal tweaks and fixes.

These are both available from my website:

More good news from VirtualAcorn

23rd January 2002

Aaron Timbrell

VirtualA5000 upgrade Pack 1

The first upgrade pack for VirtualA5000 is now available from the VirtualAcorn website at:

http://www.virtualacorn.co.uk/

This upgrade adds !65Host and some other emulators to the VirtualA5000 hard disc, now VirtualA5000 can run BBC programs.

For those who don't know VirtualA5000 is the only commercial Acorn emulator, and allows users with Windows machines to run RISC OS and RISC OS applications either in a window on the desktop or in full screen mode.

Developers sign up to VirtualA5000

A leading RISC OS developer will now be using VirtualA5000 to develop software for RISC OS. The company in question produce both PC and RISC OS versions of their programs. VirtualA5000 means that the same machine can be used to write, test and compile code for two different operating systems. The high speed disc access of VirtualA5000 means complex compilations can take less time than on a "real" RISC OS computer.

VirtualAcorn have also been approached by a number of other developers who can see the advantages VirtualA5000 offers. We will be working with these developers to produce versions of VirtualA5000 that are suited to their particular needs.

!Umlauts

23rd January 2002

Jochen Lueg

!Umlauts is a simple little program for those that need to use German, Austrian or Swiss umlauts in their work or, alternatively, have a strange and wonderful liking for these dotty characters!

The program will insert said letters into whatever application has the current input focus. Two clever buttons let you chose between the letters or the equivalent HTML identities. While I was at it, I also included the Euro (RISC OS 4) and a few other symbols I use regularly.

Umlauts is freeware.

Go to the bottom of my site and select the software link to download.

R-Comp announce EasyClip 2+ v2.20

23rd January 2002

R-Comp

R-Comp is pleased to announce the release of EasyClip 2+ version 2.20 which has been sent out to customers registered to receive the v2+ upgrades announced in October.

Amongst other things, v2.20 enhances the way the application saves your clipart and photo images out for use in other applications. In addition to the expected options to save images in their original format, images can also be converted into RISC OS formats (sprite and draw) to make it much easier to work with a wide variety of source images in all manner of RISC OS applications.

Of particular note is the WMF handling, which allows Easyclip to provide indexed thumbnails of WMF clipart CDs (for example) and convert these images to drawfiles on-the-fly as needed for use in RISC OS applications.

A final option is to save vector graphic images (ie. Draw/WMF/Artworks) as sprites, which can be convenient for online web work, where bitmap graphics are the norm.

If you have not received this upgrade via email, and believe you should have done, please contact us.

Please note that this upgrade is only applicable to owners of EasyClip 2+ (which included WebThumbs as well), launched in October.

The upgrade price from EC2 to EC2+ is 5ukp plus VAT (5.85ukp) if you haven't already purchased it in October/Nov/Dec last year.

Release of version 0.27 of Director

23rd January 2002

Philip Ludlam

This is to announce the release of version 0.27 of Director

There are two archive available for download. One contains the main Director programs and associated utilities and menus. The other also contains the source code and CVS information.

Both archives can be downloaded from:
http://www.sourceforge.net/projects/director/

Since the last stable release of Director, the following changes have been made:

Important

If you installed the first beta of 0.27 which was released on Sunday the 22nd of July then please take note of the following two pieces of information.

Choices
If you have used the previous beta release then you will need to update the default choices that are already installed on your system.

The new default choices are stored in !Director.Menus.Internal.Choices.menus.AutoRun . The file that has been updated is called !!SetVars . This file should be installed into either Choices:Director.Menus.AutoRun or !Director.Menus.AutoRun depending if you are using the 'new' !Boot sequence or not. Any changes you may have made to the installed version will need to be merged with the update.

Notes
Some existing notes files may cause problems with the updated version of Director. The easiest way to solve this problem is to remove the files from Choices:Director.Menus.IntNotes.Notes or !Director.Menus.IntNotes.Notes . Alternatively you may be able to edit the files concerned to put speech marks around the text which should solve the problem.

About

Director is a general purpose desktop tool. It allows you to customise your desktop by creating menus of useful commands and icons to attach the menus to. Any number of menus or icons can be created and attached in any order to each other.

Director also allows an alternative and faster view onto files in the form of directory menus and allows these menus to be attached to other menus also.

Director has some other useful features such as remembering the most recently used files, the ability to add key strokes into the keyboard buffer and the ability to produce directory menus over drive icons.

Director is fully customisable by the user, and can do many or all of the functions of Pinboard+, TreeMenu (AKA DirMenu), Filer-, QuickDir, DeskUtils, Memorizer, Menon and some of the functions of Filer+.

LibXML 2.4.13/LibXSLT 1.0.10/XSLDebug 0.9.5 tools update

20th January 2002

Justin Fletcher

The LibXML, LibXSLT and XSLDebug tools xmlcatalog, xmllint, xsltproc, and xsldebug as well as the RISC OS source for libxml 2.4.13 and libxslt 1.0.10 have been updated at:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/justin.fletcher/XML/

This update follows the release of the libxml 2.4.13 and libxslt 1.0.10 sources two days ago.

XML is a structured description format used in many modern applications. XSLT is a mechanism for transforming data in XML-based formats to other formats (most usually HTML or some similar markup). XML Catalogs are structured, extensible way of providing cached copies of externally accessible documents.

XMLCatalog manipulates catalogs.
XMLLint checks validity and well-formedness of XML documents.
XSLTProc applies stylesheets transforms (XSLT) to XML documents.
RXSLDebug allows debugging of stylesheet transformations.

The tools contained in these releases are used by in the 'RISC OS documentation project', which I am working on. They have been tested by myself and those working on the project.

Relevant changes in LibXML (from Daniel's release note):

Relevant changes in LibXSLT (from Daniel's releate note):

XSLDebug has been updated to build with the above (no changes necessary) and so gains from all these fixes (except stringparam).

More information about libxml2, libxslt and its related tools can be obtained from http://xmlsoft.org/. More information on xsldebug can be obtained from http://xsldbg.sourceforge.net/. libxml2 and libxslt is developed by Daniel Veillard, as an open source project in collaboration with many others. xsldebug is developed by Keith Isdale, as an open source project in collaboration with many others.

As in the past, I intend to keep RISC OS libxml2/libxslt releases within 24 hours of the base unix source release; this release missed that, because of build failures that required resolution by the authors. Hopefully, future ones should be better.

!Planets 2.4

20th January 2002

Jochen Lueg

If you have ever wanted to mess about with a solar system, find out what the dog star really looks like or, for your own personal reasons, need to revenge yourself upon the universe, this is your chance.

The program demonstrates a three body planetary system. The mass of the first two bodies can be adjusted but all the parameters for the third body can then be varied. The animation can display the resultant dynamic system in various modes - traces, solid bodies, 3D, black background or inside a star field. The effects can be quite stunning, but you have to be willing to experiment and usually waste a few planets. Interesting orbits can be saved and replayed later. Help is given via the Help button. The program also supports interactive help.

This latest version as a re-designed front end and some updated astronomical sprites. More will be added in the future. !Planets is freeware.

The program will only work on an Acorn RiscPC and can be found on my home page.

EasiFiler 1.15 Release

20th January 2002

Richard Butler

I am pleased to announce the public release of EasiFiler 1.15, the easy appplication launcher for RISC OS.

EasiFiler 1.15 would not of possible if it were not for the trojan work of Michael Martin. Michael has been key in the finding of a major bug in EasiFiler. I received many e-mails reporting this bug and all I could say was "Hold out for EasiFiler 1.15" and now that is reality.

The changes since EasiFiler 1.14 are as follows:

EasiFiler 1.15, binary and source, is available from my revamped servers at: <http://homepage.eircom.net/~lrtc>. Online documentation can be found at <http://homepage.eircom.net/~lrtc/computers/software/easifiler/easifiler.html>

DA's Picture now freeware

14th January 2002

Michael Gerbracht

The Acorn version of DA's Picture from Digital Arts is now officially declared 'Freeware'. The program was released in 1994. It is an 24 Bit image processor and will work on RISC OS 3.5 or higher (it has been tested with RISC OS 4.24 and StrongARM processor). The program is released as it is - there will be no further development.

It can now be downloaded from its own homepage where you will find some screen shots and tips how to use the program, too. There is an English and a German part of the site but unfortunately the English part isn't complete yet.

!ByJupiter

14th January 2002

Jochen Lueg

NASA's Galileo Project site at http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/galileo/ used to have a series of 120 gifs showing the Galileo probe going into orbit around Jupiter. It is quite a dramatic sequence with one of the moons whizzing by and the great red spot rotating into view.

This program, which is a re-write of one that ceased to work under RISC OS 4, allows you to look at this animation, as long as you have a RiscPC with 20M free memory. The data file for this program is unfortunately very large (6M) and is stored with a different provider, because Argonet allow only 20M. Download both sections (jupprog.zip and jupdat.zip) and please let me know if there are any problems with the data file.

The program is on the PD section of my site and the download is in two parts, the program and the data. Just drop both unzipped files into the same directory. The program is freeware. Those that have downloaded this in the past don't need the data file.

EasiHTML version 2.00

14th January 2002

Highpath

EasiHTML
This has now developed into a general HTML editor and provides a convenient means to edit HTML files without needing to understand HTML code. Version 2.00 has been released as Shareware and is available for download from

www.highpath.net/comput.htm

Use it to change font sizes, image borders, table layouts, colours, horizontal rules, list formats, file extensions, page titles and more, in both single files and across whole sites.

It can mend broken links in groups of files and add pictorial navigation buttons to the top and bottom of pages.

There are few special facilities for users of IconTechnology's EasiWriter wordprocessor, including a means to produce coordinated print and HTML output.

I hope you will find it useful.

RiscX version 0.04 available

14th January 2002

Leo White

Just a quick note to say that the latest version of RiscX is now available from

http://www.beyondthought.co.uk/

The main improvements in this version are

For those that don't know, RiscX is an X Server application for RISC OS. It allows you to run the various X client programs on a remote server (Usually a Unix/Linux based system) and see the output on your RISC OS desktop. Its one way of getting Mozilla to run on a RISC S box.

RiscX should run on any RISC OS 3+ machine (Assuming you have the memory) And has a single tasking and multi tasking mode. The multitasking mode runs quite happliy on a StrongARM machine, and the single tasking version is fast enough for most things on non-StrongArm machines.

Maybe some people have noticed, but AcornICQ doesn't function well anymore. ICQ is taken over by AOL and now they have changed the protocol drasticly. And don't support the old protocols fully. It's only possble to login and to send messages. All other functions won't work.

So we (aICQ developers) have decided to recreate aICQ from scratch and build an advance plugin system so it would be easy for everyone to create new functions for aICQ. Now we're brainstroming for ideas and though maybe some other like to join in as developer because we're beginning with a new program, so everyone may have a lot of influence aICQ will become or may have nice ideas to imlement.

So everyone: join in so aICQ will soon (few months?) be rebuild and up to date with the current protcol

AMPlayer 1.39

11th January 2002

Robin Watts

Following hard on the heels of AMPlayer 1.38 announced the other day (in a post erroneously title of AMPlayer 1.35, whoops!) comes 1.39.

1.39 fixes a few small bugs found in 1.38:

1.39 fixes all these issues and is available to download from http://www.amplayer.org/. We'd like to encourage everyone to go and download it; it should be a significant improvement on whatever previous version you have been using.

In particular users with ARM 7500FE based machines should find that AMPlayer is now capable of playing much higher bitrate MP3s than ever before (by using the new 'decimation' mode - this halves the rate of the output samples, trading off quality for speed).

Coupled with !Stream from John Duffell this means that any StrongARM or 7500FE based RISC OS machine can now listen to internet radio stations! A link to get !Stream is included at the AMPlayer home page.

Also (and this is where I stick my head in a noose and invite people to kick the chair out from underneath me), we now know of no well formed MPEG audio stream that AMPlayer will not play (except free format files). If you have an MPEG file that will not play through AMPlayer, but *will* play in another player such as AudioMPEG or WinAMP then please contact us. *DO NOT* send the file without checking with us first though; a copy of what *AMInfo returns while the file is playing would be appreciated though.

Thanks,

Robin (on behalf of the AMPlayer developers)

Once again I have changed the URL of the download site for my software (it seems to be becoming an annual habit, although I think it should remain fixed now) to http://johnallen.com/soft.html

!Lunation

5th January 2002

Jochen Lueg

That wonderful site http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/astropix.html (Astronomy Picture of the Day) had an animated gif showing the change of the moon during one month the other day - what is known as one lunation.

My program is the Acorn equivalent of this but it allows you slightly more control than an animated gif. !Lunation supports interactive help, is freeware and will only run on a RiscPC. Due to the graphics it is a long download (1M) and is to be found on my website. Just follow the link to the pd section and don't forget to take a look at Limavady while you are at it.

Palmlink for RISC OS

5th January 2002

David Breakwell

I am pleased to announce the first release of !PalmLink for RISC OS. At present this is still a beta version but I have been using for quite some time with no real issues.!Palmlink allows RISC OS users for the first time to connect Palm OS devices to their machines and transfer files to/from the handheld. To use this software you do need a serial cable/cradle for your Palm. In addition the package currently supports the conversion of text files to DOC files on the Palm. The package is careware. A donation to my Scout Group is very much appreciated. The package is available now from www.argonet.co.uk/users/davidb/

RISC OS cdparanoia beta released

5th January 2002

Alex Macfarlane Smith

From the FAQ:

Cdparanoia is a Compact Disc Digital Audio (CDDA) extraction tool, commonly known on the net as a 'ripper'. The application is built on top of the Paranoia library, which is doing the real work (the Paranoia source is included in the cdparanoia source distribution). Like the original cdda2wav, cdparanoia package reads audio from the CDROM directly as data, with no analog step between, and writes the data to a file or pipe in WAV, AIFC or raw 16 bit linear PCM.

This is an initial port to RISC OS, and basically seems to work OK other than a few bugs. More information is available in the ReadMe in the archive. Note that this is a command-line application, there's no frontend for it yet.

The binary archive for the moment will be available shortly at:
http://www.archifishal.freeserve.co.uk/cdparanoia.zip

The source archive is at:
http://www.archifishal.freeserve.co.uk/cdparanoia-src.zip

These may move somewhere more sensible once I have unmetered internet access again.

SLYM Announcement

5th January 2002

CUMANA

Dear All,

As many of you have been aware for some time now we have been working on new RISC OS Web browser box, namely SLYM.

We are pleased to announce that the first release of this unit will happen at the forthcoming BETT show at Olympia, London. With our partners Castle we will be demonstrating this new product which will hopefully see a new way forward for RISC OS technology. You will get to see the new Neuron board which is the technology behind SLYM. We also hope to have an ADSL connection (thanks to our partner Dialnet) which will give us a great opportunity of showing schools how useful this unit will be.

I'm also pleased to announce that Cumana has become a Sophos Anti Virus Partner in the last few weeks.

Sophos is one of the largest independent anti-virus vendors in the world and they are based here in the UK. Their approach is to offer potential customers the reassurance that they are dedicated to their needs and offer an effective, sensible and seamless virus protection service. All of their sales, technical support and research is also all done within the UK.

SAV (Sophos Anti-Virus) has a sophisticated virus detection system which provides protection at key points in a schools IT infrastructure. SAV is designed to protect Servers, desktops and laptops on school networks. It offers on demand, scheduled and on-access scanning, and provides protection across multiple platforms in one single product.

The software incorporates a range of reporting an management tools to help network administrators. SAV can be installed and updated centrally from one machine across the entire network. Once the server is updated all of the client machines on the network are automatically updated.

We are proud to be associated with Sophos and their product and as a qualified partner we are only one of few that are dedicated to the education market.

Come onto Stand B62 and see SLYM in action and also pick your free Sophos 30 day evaluation CD.

!Jess version 1.11

5th January 2002

David

!Jess version 1.11 (Fri 4th January 2002) is now on my website

http://www.dacha.freeuk.com/free/

!Jess can extract multiple JPEGs embedded in other files such as some Windows screensavers

(e.g. at http://www.traveltex.com/screen.asp?SN=1203087&LS=0&SS=2),

PowerPoint presentations or RISC OS Drawfiles. It can also split Exif JPEGs with embedded thumbnails into two JFIF JPEGs.

Version 1.11 fixes a small problem in earlier versions that sent !Jess a bit loopy. It also now gives the extracted files the same filedate as the original.

Streaming MP3 (Shoutcast) Player Released

5th January 2002

John Duffell

Now that AMPlayer has a streaming input interface, it has become possible to write much more efficient MP3 radio players. As far as I am aware, the first publically released streaming mp3 radio player to make use of these facilities is Stream, written by myself. It currently only supports shoutcast, but it may later be upgraded to support mp3.com's "m3u" files.

Please note that you will require a recent version of AMPlayer, I recommend version 1.38 which was released today.

Stream is available from http://duffell.cjb.net/ and AMPlayer is available from http://www.amplayer.org/

Send comments, bug reports and suggestions to me, at the above address.

!RiscSearch v0.85

5th January 2002

Patrick Mortara

!RiscSearch v0.85ß is now available from www.riscsearch.de. A lot of internal changes has been done, some of them are:

For all of you, who don't know about !RiscSearch:
!RiscSearch is meant to be a meta-search engine, and AFAIK it is the only one available for RISC OS anywhere. It helps you to find web-pages about a certain topic by asking different search engines about the keywords you supply. It collects results from (at the moment) 9 different engines, filters out duplicate matches and then presents all links in a window of your web-browser.

http://www.argonet.co.uk/users/daves/software/index.html

Version 1.26 is just going up alongside this announcement.

Changes since the last version:

Minor bug fix so that when copying jpegs unchanged, it set the extension correctly.
