The latest version of SiteMatch has been uploaded to my site for your use. The main changes from the last version is the ability to exclude certain files or filetypes from being changed, custom ftp paths, and it should now work with a variety of filing systems.
SiteMatch will give the ability to;
SiteMatch is still undergoing development, so feedback, suggestions and bug reporting are welcome.

This program is Thanksware, which means that if you like it and use it then it would be nice of you just to say thanks ;)
Happy New Year :-)
It has been brought to my notice that there is a problem with the score tables with Shanghai (thanks to Nic Sheppard for that). It is not a bug but I forgot that SparkFS removes empty directories when compressing programs. What is required is to create a directory called Scores inside the Resources directory and then all should be well. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. I will rectify the problem on my website so that further downloads will not suffer from this small problem.
For those of you that don't know about Shanghai, it is a new version of the popular desktop game with 15 different layouts for you to choose from and comes with high resolution graphics. It can be found at my website below.
A Happy New Year to you all.

has, for some time now, been flaunting the RISC OS platform to the rest of the world. At the moment, however, a number of its categories are not as complete as they should be, and need editors!
If you have a product that is not currently listed, then why not become an editor for that category, and put it there yourself? ODP listings are trusted, and consequently are picked up by major search engines. Think of all the extra hits that will generate for you!
This is easy to do, and takes very little effort indeed.
The following categories are examples of those that currently need editors:
RISC OS: Bulletin Boards
RISC OS: Dealers: United Kingdom
RISC OS: Dealers (others)
RISC OS: Developers
RISC OS: Documentation
RISC OS: Hardware
RISC OS: Magazines and News
RISC OS: Software: Disc Rescue
Of course, there are many more.
Even major RISC OS companies are still not listed. So, whenever anyone searches for general software, RISC OS software that fits the bill is being missed out.
Join the ODP, and with a little help, even if only once, RISC OS can reach further into the world in the New Year.

Due to a mistake I lost my emails and address book (the backup disc was used for something else the last days)
Please re-send to me the emails I didn't reply.
Also if you contacted me in the past please send an email to me so I can re-build my address book.
Thank you in advance
This has been sent from my work email account so I don't get too much spam to my personal email account. Please don't reply to this address.
I've thrown together a simple web cam app for usage with a RiscTV and a video camera. You can get a simple camera for under 50 quid at http://www.maplin.co.uk/
It's all written in BASIC and it's easy to modify so you could adapt it for any other form of image capture.
It uses FTPc, so you need this.
I got a lot of help from other people writing the software so please read the help file for their credits.
To get the software go to: http://jadeb.com/ then click on Daniel at the top left then click on Download at the middle left.
Oh, and it's all free as well.
For a demo of it go to: http://danielb.org/ (if it's up).

Version 1.6 of Vice, the Versatile Commodore Emulator has been released. Vice is an emulator suite covering the 8bit CBM computers C64, C128, CBM-II, PET and VIC20 and is released under the GNU Public License (GPL). The RISC OS version can be downloaded from my software-page at
http://www.forwiss.tu-muenchen.de/~dehmel/Software.html
or the official Vice homepage at
http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dsladic/vice/vice.html
where you can also get the source code and a list of news in the generic engine.
The major news in the RISC OS version are:
Please read the file ReadMeSnd within the archive as it gives important information on the sound code and how to configure it.
Caveat: these emulators need a lot of processor power and memory. Minimum spec to be useful is a StrongARM RiscPC with 16MB RAM.

Oww is a client for the Dallas Semiconductor 1-wire weather station, available for RISC OS and Linux (GTK).
New in 0.62:
The "Devices" dialogue has been improved; 1-wire devices discovered in a search operation may be selected and reallocated between weather station functions. For example, you may swap counters between anemometer / rain gauge, or change the order of wind vane IDs.
New in 0.61:
Web upload of weather data to the Dallas servlet and/or The Weather Underground.
ROX-Filer 1.0.0 - the official stable release of the filer, is now available from the website:
http://rox.sourceforge.net/rox_filer.php3
Development is continuing with the 1.1.x series, where we are currently adding support for thumbnails, automatic window resizing, and other features - feel free to join the mailing list and add your own suggestions!
The filer is distributed under the GNU General Public License, which means that anyone can modify it, use bits of it in their own (GPL) programs, etc. Indeed, many of the improvements made to the filer were added by other ROX users and posted as patches to the mailing list.
There are now two mailing lists, rox-users and rox-devel. You can subscribe here, or look at the archives:

I would like to announce my new website.
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/david_chapman/index.html
It contains updates to two of the programs I have written which were published on AUCD 8 this year:
changes from original:
I am using RISC OS 4.02 which obviously handles longfilenames, if you don't have RISC OS 4 then to use the above feature, it may be wise to use raFS or similar to prevent truncation of the filename.
At the moment Shanghai is really only for use with a screen size of 1024x768, with preferably 32k colours, as I haven't found out how to scale the sprites for different screenmodes yet :-( It is useable with higher screen sizes but the tiles may be harder to see ;-) but the board won't fit onto lower screen sizes.
If you have any comments or suggestions for further improvements to either program then please get in touch. I guess criticism is welcome too.
Today's topics: New Collections
Online ordering with credit cards
There are two new ArtWorks modules collections available: The Full Set Collection has been replaced by the New Full Set Collection, which now contains the TextArea module as well. It is available for the amazing price of 70 Pounds, so you save 67.50 Pounds compared to the sum of the individual modules.
The second new collection is the Update Collection containing all the modules I have released in the year 2000, i.e., BMExport, Grids and TextArea. It is available for 50 Pounds (so you save 10 Pounds).
As usual, you can find information about such offers on the ordering and payment page at
http://www.mw-software.com/paying.html
Following several other RISC OS based shareware and commercial software developers, I have signed up with UK Shareware Registration Ltd., an online ordering service, so you can finally order some of my products using your credit card. The online ordering facility is currently available for TextArea and the New Full Set Collection. The Update Collection will follow in due course - watch my Web site at

This to announce an upgrade to raFS Enhancements.
Program : raFS Enhancements
Purpose : Provide a few enhancements to raFS
Version : 1.01 (release), Saturday the 16th of December, 2000
Author : Richard Atterer / Philip Ludlam, 2000
raFS Enhancements provides a set of extensions to raFS to make it more user friendly.
For instance:
In the interest of clarity I will point out that I have not taken on development of raFS
The change in version 1.01:
I have removed the explicit path reference to raFS, so that the enhancements are more in-line with the general nature of RISC OS. Consequently you can no longer load a raFS disc without the filer having first seen !raFS. See the accompanying help file for tips on Filer_Booting !raFS at startup.
raFS Enhancements can be downloaded from
http://www.philipnet.com/riscos/extensions/rafs.html
There is some new software on my web site:
This program was released ages ago as PD. It did not have the source and it was very complicated to configure. This time the source has been released with it.
You may be wondering why this is being released. It is because it might help you with any programming tips. The code is not brilliant (I have no idea what brilliant code is!), but it might be useful for those who are starting DrWimp.
I hope you use them. Download them from http://get-me.to/snigger/

As promised, the first new edition of Sleuth 3 'under new management' was made available today.
Supplied on CD-ROM, Sleuth 3 is the leading OCR package for all RISC OS computers. Despite popular opinion, Sleuth 3 will work on any RISC OS computer; with at least 4Mb of RAM and a Hard Disc.
To take advantage of the additional space on the CD-ROM, the following items are supplied:
Nope - the last one's not a typo. We're supplying Sleuth 2 on the disc as well. Sleuth 3 is a superb package for OCR, but can on occasion be slow. If you need to do something quickly, but without the accuracy, Sleuth 2 is ideal. It's hence supplied.
ProAction/APDL also have available a number of complementary items, supporting the use of a DTP system under RISC OS. These include:
Typestudio (9.90ukp)
For a complete, up to date, catalogue please view the APDL website at http://www.apdl.co.uk/.
If you wish to order, payment is accepted by cheque/postal order and most credit cards.
Tel: 0208 778 2659
Email: info@apdl.co.uk
Don't forget - 18/12/00 is the last date by which we can receive orders to get them to you for Christmas.
The ARM Club is pleased to announce that it is now possible to purchase DiscKnight by credit card. This will enable us to provide an express service for emergency purchases, and make it easier for non-UK customers to arrange payment.
DiscKnight is the only program which can check and fix both old and new (RISC OS 4 long filename) format hard discs.
The price is the same low 10ukp for all UK and international customers, To order follow the link from the DiscKnight home page:
http://www.armclub.org.uk/products/discknight/
A copy DiscKnight will emailed to you with in 48 hours.
The credit card facility is provided by UK Shareware Registration Ltd, which has also been used for other RISC OS programs, such as Chris Morison's !Organiser.
The Superior Software titles are largely classics. The likes of Repton et al have given much pleasure to thousands of people over the years.
To celebrate the first Christmas of the new millennium, you can buy every single Superior game released for 32-bit computers, at just 25ukp. We'll even aim to have it with you for Christmas: just reply, together with your name address and telephone number; and we'll send you the pack together with an invoice.
Versions do exist for all RISC OS computers, with the vast majority of titles. In order to keep Acorn Arcade(TM) happy, the exact titles contained within this pack include:
AIR SUPREMACY
REPTON 1/2/3/4
PLAY IT AGAIN SAM 1/2/3/4
TECHNODREAM
... and more!
To qualify, we must have your details by 17th December. If we're going to catch the post in time for Christmas, at least!
We've decided to make the Acorn Games Book, as previously described, available only to the persons whom have enquired thus far. There's a specific reason for this, down largely to an enjoyment/aggro factor which suddenly fell completely out of proportion.
Those whom have already enquired will be contacted with full details, and an order form, shortly.
The latest version of ButtonBar is now available from my website at
http://www.mat.bham.ac.uk/llewelld/dnload.htm
'ButtonBar' is suite of programs which allow you to create button bars for any program which accepts keyboard shortcuts. Bars can be set to attach themselves to windows or float freely around the desktop. The editor, which is now at version 1.31, has been newly updated to improve functionality using drag-and-drop wherever possible.
ButtonBar is freeware and comes with a collection of ready-made bars for you to try out!
With reference to our earlier posting, we do still provide telephone support to Power-tec users, or previous posting was to help make it clear we are unable to provide FREE telephone support!
Below is our original posting which went on Power-chat mailing list...
Surftec Ltd are pleased to announce that we are opening up our existing schools support line to Power-tec customers also.
For 10ukp exc VAT (11.75ukp inc VAT) we are pleased to be able to offer telephone assistance on Power-tec configuration issues and problems.
This service is a bolt-on extra for customers with current support either still valid from Alsystems or taken out with Partis Computing.
We have made this available as both Surftec and Partis Computing appreciate that it is not always easy to resolve complicated issues via e-mail, indeed a small minority of customers do not have Internet access.
Telephone support is for those extreme cases where e-mail support or the mailing list are unable to help efficiently. I want to be as helpful as possible when you are in difficulty but I do also want to ensure it is fully clear what the limits of this service are, and how it all works:
The phone lines are open between 8.30am to 6.30pm, Monday through to Saturday. We aim to be available on the support line for 2 hours each day between these hours.
We are mostly on the road, and so Power-tec support is only available initially on the following number:
+44 (0)7940 799833
We will always advise you of a fixed line phone to call in on if available to save you a costly call, or an alternate time to call our main office number when we know someone will be able to take the call.
We regret that to ensure costs are kept to a minimum so that we can offer this service at a low price we will be unable to return any calls, or messages.
If you are greeted by voicemail, simply hang-up and wait 30 minutes then try again, we cannot return messages!
It is our aim to give you the most efficient and helpful service as possible, and want to make it clear and up-front as possible that Surftec Ltd is a small company and so it is not possible for us to be available at all times.
Surftec Ltd are currently unable to accept Credit/Debit Cards, telephone support can be purchased by posting a cheque made payable to 'Surftec Ltd' for 11.75 to the address below. Please ensure you include your full name, address, telephone number and e-mail address.
Support can only be given once we have received payment (we will give support on un-cleared cheques once they have been received).
A new sample player has been released called DataPlayer.
It is written to be fast and reliable, it will probably be of most use to people who use machines which can't play mp3s and want to listen to music off their computers, e.g. RiscStation/Mico owners.
It can play the output from dmpa, and also cd tracks copied using SampleCD or AudioFS. A front end is supplied as well as the module with documented API.
The URL for the above is
http://duffell.net/, or
http://www-users.york.ac.uk/~jwd104/ for a more direct link.
The archive itself is http://www-users.york.ac.uk/~jwd104/software/dp.zip and help is contained within.
This is to announce raFS Enhancements
Program : raFS Enhancements
Purpose : Provide a few enhancements to raFS
Version : 1.00 (release), Saturday the 9th of December, 2000
Author : Richard Atterer / Philip Ludlam 2000
raFS Enhancements provides a set of extensions to raFS to make it more user friendly.
For instance:
More information and the program can be found at:
http://www.philipnet.com/riscos/extensions/rafs.html
A new version of the freeware singlestepper/disassembler ARM_Debug is now available.
Version 1.29 is now RISC OS 4 compatible. ARM_Debug is a single/multistepper with record facilities. You can:
I've also uploaded a new patch for Phaethon, Phaethon is now RISC OS 4 compatible.
These programs can be found by pointing your browser at
http://www.vd-boogaert.myweb.nl/
The East London West Essex Acorn User Group no longer exists, in its place is the M25 East Risc OS User Group.
After a very successful meeting on 5th Dec. the following decisions were made:
The name for the club will be M25 East Risc OS User Group (M25EROUG), which will meet on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at 7.00pm, at Harold Court School, Church Road, Harold Wood, RM3 0SH, and there will be no subscription fees.
The first meeting will be on 16th January, 2001 at 7.00pm. The topic for the evening will be an introduction to creating your own Web Site by Paul Robinson (Aleph1) and dgs.
!Swipe V0.15 is now available at http://www.astubbs.f2s.com/swipe.html
New features:
All these modifications by GUS (http://users.otenet.gr/g/gusuni/).
For those who do not know what !Swipe is: !Swipe is a small application which sits quietly in the background until you hit its hot keys (left shift + left alt by default) when it springs into life and grabs any text currently under the mouse pointer. It presents this in a small window in which you may 'swipe' out whatever text you want. This is then placed on the global clipboard for use with any compatible application and !Swipe also provides a simple pasting mechanism for those applications which do not support the clipboard. Swipe is an excellent companion for IcnClipBrd and Clipman. For more information, screenshots and download see http://www.astubbs.f2s.com/swipe.html
To fix a bug in !DBaseChk preventing pre-0.80 version datafiles to convert correctly to the new format, I've created a patched version of the !DBaseChk !RunImage file which does the conversion correctly.
You can download it from http://home.wanadoo.nl/jan.ganzevles/
To upgrade, open the !DiskBase application, open the !DBaseChk aplication inside !DiskBase and copy the patched !RunImage out of the archive file and into !DBaseChk. This should overwrite the old !RunImage file. As a check start !DBaseChk and verify that the Info window from the iconbar-icon does show version '0.81P(20 Nov 2000)'.
For all of you never heard of !DiskBase, this is a disk/CD catalogue program with facilities for search files/directories/applications, check for duplicates, print floppy labels and more.
ProAction Software and APDL are pleased to announce that, with immediate effect, we have taken over publication of Sleuth 2 and 3.
Sleuth 2 is an entry level OCR package, trained for a number of fonts and ideal for the person who only occasionally uses their Acorn scanner to its full; text readily readable, potential.
Sleuth 3 is the market-leading OCR package for RISC OS, offering understanding of a much wider range of fonts, an improved recognition front end, user dictionaries, the ability to export as RTF, and much, much more.
A full specification for either program can be supplied on request.
All editions will shortly be supplied on CD-ROM as standard: if you require floppy discs, please state so at the time of placing the order.
Robert Werry Computer Services is pleased to announce Version 3.01 of our highly successful career investigation software, The Careers Workshop, for both RISC OS and Windows platforms.
The Careers Workshop is an integrated suite of programs aimed at secondary school students and young job-seekers. It includes the following modules:
The new RISC OS version of The Careers Workshop has been totally rewritten using Simon Glass's superb S-Base programming language, and has great potential for future expansion.
More than 10% of Australian state secondary schools, as well as numerous youth organisations and employment agencies already use The Careers Workshop as part of their career education programs.
We are currently seeking a distributor for the British version of the software (both RISC OS and Windows) and would welcome expressions of interest from anyone willing to actively promote it in the UK. Please direct all enquiries to our email address.
For a number of years now, our email address has been of the form
someone@claresmicro.com.
This will continue to be the case. However, it has also been possible to email us at addresses of the form
someone@clares.demon.co.uk.
This will cease to be the case at some point before the end of the year.
If you have the old form of the address in your address book, please update it to the new one.
Our website address remains unchanged: http://www.claresmicro.com/.
Artex Software - TEK Update
The latest news about the realtime strategy game TEK 1608 can now be found on the Artex Software website:

For those who have been plagued by attachments hidden in winmail.dat files being sent from PC users who don't know better...
!DeTNEF is a conversion of a UN*X program by Thomas Boll which will rip all the attachments out of a winmail.dat (or other TNEF) file.
TNEF stands for Transport Neutral Encapsulation Format
Many thanks to Stuart Halliday for pointing out the Source to the original on the Messenger Mailing List.

Hope you enjoy them.
Surftec have been increasingly being getting more and more enquiries from Power-tec users regarding issues with their cards, support or software.
I (Neil Farnham-Smith) used to work for Alsystems as a Software Support Engineer, one of my job roles was to support Power-tec, however since leaving Alsystems and starting Surftec over a year ago I am no longer directly involved with the product.
Surftec Ltd only have one link with Partis Computing/Power-tec, that is we are a dealer of Power-tec products, in the same way as most other Acorn dealers, such as CJE, CTA etc.
I do personally have a better relationship with Gary Partis over other dealers, this is unavoidable as I worked with him for a number of years.
Gary Partis has chosen to continue support and development of the product, however is unable to offer telephone support, e-mail/fax support is available.
Surftec therefore does offer telephone support to Power-tec users, however this is charged at 10ukp for a years subscription and covers 2 support issues during this period.
We do not offer free support on Power-tec, however we do offer free support on all our other products sold by Surftec.
Therefore, I've had to make the difficult decision to cease all FREE Power-tec support dealings and would ask people to either purchase our extended support package to cover telephone support, or to not phone or e-mail in the first place.
The amount of Power-tec enquiries is starting to effect our overall service to Surftec customers, today I have received more calls and e-mails regarding Power-tec than genuine Surftec enquiries, this has to stop, and I hope anyone effected by this decision of mine will understand my difficult position.
Please be assured, I would love to help everyone, but this just isn't possible any longer. Dealer enquiries however are still accepted.
If you wish to purchase our extended telephone support package for Power-tec then simply send a cheque for 11.75ukp inc VAT made payable to 'Surftec Ltd' to the address below. Ensure you include your full name, address, telephone number and e-mail address. You will also need to purchase Partis Computing support as well as we are only able to support the latest release of Power-tec software.
I am pleased to confirm that ProAction have, as of today, taken full ownership of TypeStudio, the text effects package formerly published by BEEBUG Ltd. Whilst we are actively developing the package (hence the announcement of the beta scheme) we also have available version 2.56 of the program, fixing many of the bugs present in earlier versions.
Full details, including specifications, are currently held at http://www.beebug.co.uk/software/typestudio.html but we shall shortly be moving the information into either the APDL or ProAction domain.
Additional features present within the CD-ROM edition include
The CD-ROM, priced at ukp9.90, will be available from APDL, on 0208 778 2659 or by email to info@apdl.co.uk, for Friday morning. If you wish to subscribe to the beta scheme, supporting the development of TypeStudio 1 into TypeStudio 2, please email dbproaction@aol.com for full information.

ProAction Media is pleased to announce the impending release of a comprehensive guide to every Acorn game ever published. Whilst we may miss one or two along the way, we're going more for the spirit of bringing together perhaps the largest book ever dedicated to Acorn gaming. Sections include:
This book is due for publication on 14th December, consisting of 256 pages together with a colour cover. The price for the whole collection, including the CD-ROM, has been set at £19.99. I appreciate that this is a high price, but we cannot afford to publish it at anything less, and we've already confirmed the inclusion of four commercial games in the bundle.
If you'd like to order, please email me at this address. Unfortunately, if we receive less than 20 orders we'll be unable to publish the book and CD-ROM collection.

Sorry folks, another bit on the riscos.org.uk URL service:
User groups may have a URL in the form of www.NAME.riscos.org.uk - someone has just asked and I thought it was a good idea.
So, you can have a URL for a:
I think that about covers it now!
Thanks to everyone who has signed up for a free riscos.org.uk URL - takeup has been great!
If you run a RISC OS show, you also can have a riscos.org.uk URL for that show which can then later be removed if required. Please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Regarding the announcement in Acorn User of the service, you do not get www.YOURNAME.riscos.org.uk, but www.APPNAME.riscos.org.uk. Obviously there could well be one or two exceptions, but I'd rather people used www.APPNAME.org.uk.
A list of URLs in use can be found at www.riscos.org.uk which I try to keep up-to-date!The game Blockout I developed on RiscPC 700 is available for download on my web-site: http://perso.club-internet.fr/dmoyne/
It is a clone of the wellknown game Welltris. It is a Wimp application requiring Risc OS 3.60+ as it is using nested windows. The machine code contains some basic FPU instruction which should not be a problem with typical FPE module as provided. Have fun and do not hesitate to comment on game features to possibly improve existing version!
I have just put Brandy 1.05 on my web site at:
There are a number of bugs fixed in this version and two new extensions to Basic V:
Some portability issues have also been sorted out.
We are pleased to announce several new versions, and news for the Brimingham show this Saturday:
The highlighting system is able to cope with tables, forms etc. so that you can quickly and easily pull information from web pages for inclusion in your own documents.
A number of more minor enhancements have been made, too.
As usual, this will be a free upgrade for existing customers (shortly, to allow for any post-show feedback).
QuickFetch system for mail, news or mail&news. This logs on to the selected account, fetches mail/news, then disconnects. The user is given the option to stay online if they wish.
Idle disconnect. After a definable period of inactivity, DialUp will optionally disconnect. The user is warned when disconnection is approaching, and given the option to stay online.
Easier modem init string config. We wish it wasn't necessary, and in most cases it isn't, but every so often we come across someone with a non-standard modem. It is now possible to sort this in a friendly dialogue box.
Modem volume control. The volume of the modem's beeps and whistles can now be set.
Support for Interactive !Help. Windows now have help on buttons, boxes, sliders etc. The software still has much "in window" help and examples, but this extends the help available.
Plus various other minor enhancements
Again, this will be a free update.

iSV Products is delighted to announce that a new version of StarFighter 3000 will be lauched at the Acorn Midlands Show. This is recompiled from the original sources and not just an old patched version. Much improved graphics and sound are among some of the many many enhancements.
StarFighter 3000 is one of the most highly regarded RISC OS games ever written. The ultimate 3D combat and strategy game now runs on all RISC OS machines, including those with RISC OS 4.
Supplied on CD StarFighter 3000 also comes with 3 other combat/space games.
Air Supremacy from Superior Software is a 3D combat simulator including tanks, planes, airships and more.
SunBurst the galactic mission based game from Visions of the Impossible.
And for a limited time only a version of Elite is also supplied.
The best news is the price, all of these classic games, two of which have been unavailable for some time are all on one CD called "Other Worlds" for only 15ukp (+1.50 ukp carriage).
Why not pop along and see us on the 2nd of December at Acorn Midlands Show!
