MalCheck - trace bugs involving malloc() blocks

27th August 2002

Erik Groenhuis

MalCheck - the malloc() block checker

A library with header file which enables the C programmer to track down problems involving blocks manipulated with malloc(), calloc() and realloc().

Calls to these routines are intercepted by defining appropriate macros. The allocated blocks are surrounded with guards and changes in their contents are detected. On every call, all known blocks are checked for illegal changes. Information on the blocks includes a backtrace.

It works both with Clib and UnixLib.

The package is FREEWARE. You can download it at

http://www.xs4all.nl/~erikgrnh/riscos/malcheck.html

Any and all comments are welcome at mailto:erik.goenhuis@xs4all.nl

RISC OS port of Subversion

27th August 2002

Alex Waugh

I have ported the Subversion client to RISC OS, available from my website: http://www.alexwaugh.com/

"The goal of the Subversion project is to build a version control system that is a compelling replacement for CVS in the open source community. The software is released under an Apache/BSD-style open source license." For more infomation about Subversion, see http://subversion.tigris.org/

Subversion is currently *Alpha*, so some features may not be fully implemented, or may contain bugs. This port can only access repositories via http, and not (currently) local repositories.

Please let me know if you find this useful, or if there are any problems with it.

Scottish Omega demo - confirmation details

25th August 2002

Alan Gibson

A venue in Livingston has now been booked for Microdigital to demonstrate their Omega computer and to answer our questions, on Saturday, 7th September 2002. The following place may unfortunately not be ideal for everyone but we were booking at short notice, so apologies all round if this is the case (but please see the end of the message).

The venue is:

Deans Community High School
Eastwood Park
Livingston
West Lothian
EH54 8PS

Tel: 01506 497090

http://www.streetmap.co.uk/streetmap.dll?P2M?P=eh548ps&Z=1

Livingston North Railway Station is close by and this can be reached from Edinburgh Waverley or Haymarket (about 10 mins walk?).

>From Glasgow:

Come off at Junction 3a of the M8
Turn right at the little roundabout at the end of this junction.

Travel along the road (you will see the NEC complex pass on your left). At the next roundabout (The Royston) turn right.

See ** below

>From Edinburgh:

Travel along the A89 road until you pass a SHELL petrol station on your right.

You will arrive at a small roundabout. Turn left.

You will approach 'Royston' roundabout, go straight over.

See ** below

**
Travel downhill now until you come to another roundabout, turn left at this.

You will *very* shortly come to a T-junction (you will see a snooker center to your left across the road).

Take a left at this T-junction and travel along it.
Drive for about 1.5 miles you'll see a small roundabout with a raised centre.
Take a left and you will see to your left a white complex in grounds.
Take the first left and you will be shortly in its free car park.
At the car park, look for a door with a few steps leading up to it and you are in the Deans High School.

More details
I intend entrance to be *free* and there are currently around 40 people who have said they're coming (bring your friends!). We're booked from 1.30-4.45, the intention being to have set up and be ready to start around 2pm until, say, 4.30pm. There are stairs leading to the room so unfortunately this may not be suitable for some disabled people (you could mailto:stuart@cybervillage.co.uk for exact details as he's been there). If this rules people out, I would be willing to do a personal demo at a later date when I get my own machine. Bring your own refreshments is you like.

A plea
We're trying to get hold of a digital projector, so that MD can plug the Omega in and display the output on a big screen. The school's are all booked out - does anyone have access to one who would be willing to bring it along? If we have to hire one there may be a small entrance fee after all... Please email me if you can, thanks.

Thanks
Many thanks to *the* Stuart Halliday for finding the venue and a big thanks to MD for coming all the way up here just to talk to us ;-)

If you require any more info, please mailto:alan@liquid-silicon.com - if not. I'll see you there.

RCI announce the release of new firmware for Net 100 network cards

19th August 2002

R-Comp Interactive/RCI

We are pleased to announce that version 1.26 of the Net100 ethernet card software has been released and sent out to our customers via email.

The new software may provide small performance benefits, but ultimately the Net100 is limited by the speed of the computer, and the OS. Benchmarks on various web reviews etc show that the Net100 is already the best performing 100Mbit network card, and the ongoing software development can only benefit this.

The main addition in version 1.26 is the inclusion of more comprehensive *configure commands. Whilst most users will not require this, it means that the card can be configured into different modes manually, as well as the standard auto-negotiation. Put simply, this makes the cards more flexible, although most users will leave the cards on the default settings.

The new software can also be downloaded from the RCI web site. Go to www.rcomp.co.uk and click on the RCI Networking link.

R-Comp announce the release of Messenger Pro 2.60a

19th August 2002

R-Comp

We are pleased to announce that the enhanced Messenger Pro 2.60a has been sent out to all Messenger Pro 2 (v2.50) customers via email. The upgrade was sent out last Friday. If you have not received your upgrade yet, please get in touch with us. We had a great many bounced upgrades this time. Please let us know when you change your email address.

Messenger Pro 2.60a is the result of many smaller updates that have taken place during the development of Messenger Pro Server Edition (released earlier this year). The changes made during this time have resulted in a number of improvements for existing users of the standard Messenger Pro 2 product.

Of particular note, is much enhanced PGP support, especially for the new Gnu PGP software, which will be of significant interest to those using PGP security on their emails.

There have also been improvements to facilities such as distribution lists, which will now automatically split lists to avoid problems with long lists with many ISPs.

The server version introduced a new database format, which has allowed a number of other facilities to be present. Many of these are fairly low level, and might appear a little complex! Chief among the new facilities are message locking, and the ability to share a folder's read/unread flags between different Messenger users, rather than each user seeing different unread/read. This is optional, of course, but can be very handy for a single person running several different user "identities".

Most of the changes are "under-the-hood", to make Messenger Pro 2 even better than it already was!

For more information on the Messenger Pro 2 family of products, please go to www.rcomp.co.uk and click on the Messenger Pro link.

IRBlanker released - blank your screen with your remote!

18th August 2002

Glenn Richards

Squirrel Solutions has released IRBlanker, a nifty little utility for users of the IRMan infra-red receiver.

As the name suggests, IRBlanker allows you to blank and unblank the screen with your TV or hi-fi remote control. It can use either two buttons (one for blank and one for unblank) or a single button to blank and unblank with a toggle action.

IRBlanker requires an IRMan or compatible device, and the Squirrel Solutions IRMan driver. IRBlanker and the IRMan driver are free software.

IRBlanker can be downloaded from the IRMan homepage, located at:

http://www.squirrel-net.co.uk/software/irman/

It has also been pointed out to us that the IRMan driver also works with HomeElectro's IRA (Infra-Red Adaptor), and should work with many of the new IRMan compatible devices currently available. Thanks to Justin Fletcher for this information.

Announcing Oww 0.68.0

Announcing Oww 0.68.0

http://melhuish.info/simon/projects/oww/

[Oww is an application for RISC OS and Linux (and other Unix flavours) to control a Dallas Semiconductor / AAG 1-wire weather station, and associated weather instruments. See www.aag.com.mx for hardware. UK supplier: http://www.techsupplies.co.uk/]

Finally I got around to adding a window (the "Auxilliary Window") that shows all of Oww's readings. For example, you can see all temperatures, barometers and GPCs. All of these remain available to the output parser, so you can still send values off to logs and other programs, &c.

Please tell me about any problems.

Money Manager (Demo now available)

16th August 2002

Darren Windsor

Due to a number of requests I have decided to upload a demo copy of our popular personal accounts package, Money Manager 2002, to our website. For those interested goto http://www.imagesoft.co.uk/ and follow the links to the software product catalogue. From here you can take a (very brief!) tour of the application and download a demo copy (complete with PDF manual).

The archive size is just over 2MB (you will need to allow about 5 minutes to download with a dial-up connection).

To read the manual you will need either !RiScript from Cerilica (this is a commercial product) or the freely available !PDF, available from http://www.pdf.iconbar.com/

This version of the package is fully functional but limits the user to 10 transactions per account. The manual contains a tutorial taking you through all the facilities provided.

Money Manager 2002 recently received high praise in the RISC OS press. We're pleased to give people the opportunity to 'try before they buy' to see how the package compares with other offerings.

If you have any queries regarding the product, please do not hesitate to contact us. Our contact details can be found in the signature below.

Thank you for your time.

NetWatch 1.62 available

15th August 2002

Maarten Bezemer

I've just uploaded NetWatch version 1.62.

The following changes are made:

FileBase may use the proxy settings also.
Aborting transfers is working better now.
Removed a bad bug in the FileBase code, which corrupted the menus and the locally stored file.
Added multilanguage support
Added Dutch resources
Removed some minor bugs/typos and changed the English resources a bit.

NetWatch is available at my website:
http://home.student.utwente.nl/m.m.bezemer/netwatchuk.html

For people who don't know what NetWatch is:

NetWatch is a program which keeps up with changes on the internet. The user has to mark the pages of his interest. NetWatch will fetch these pages at defined intervals and calculate a checksum (MD5). This checksum is compared with the store checksum of the page. When these checksum aren't the same the page has changed and NetWatch will warn the user.

It's also possible to download something with NetWatch and when the download gets aborted for some reason, NetWatch is able to resume the download! (At least when the server is able to do)

Announcing Oww 0.67.13 - Vane Dispersion Ring

13th August 2002

Simon Melhuish

Announcing Oww 0.67.13 with Vane Dispersion Ring

http://melhuish.info/simon/projects/oww/

[Oww is an application for RISC OS and Linux (and other Unix flavours) to control a Dallas Semiconductor / AAG 1-wire weather station, and associated weather instruments. See www.aag.com.mx for hardware.]

For this version I have added a ring of 16 segments around the wind vane compass rose central boss. Each segment is coloured from white to black according to how many of the last 15 wind vane readings were in this direction. This gives a good visual representation of both the average wind direction and the degree of spread.

MicroDigita Omega presentation

12th August 2002

David Holden

APDL are pleased to announce that, in conjunction with MicroDigital and the various AAUG clubs in the London area, we have arranged a demonstration of the Omega computer by David Atkins of MicroDigital.

This will take place on September 11th at the venue normally used by the M25 East RISC OS User Group. This is Harold Court School, Church Road, Harold Wood, RM3 0SH. The time has not yet been finalised but it is expected to be about 7.30 in the evening.

The venue is very easy to get to. It's about 3 minutes from junction 28 (junction with the A12) on the M25 and very close to Harold Wood station. There is plenty of car parking space. For detailed instructions see the M25EROUG web site at <http://www.m25eroug.riscos.org.uk/>.

Everyone will be welcome, so please do tell your friends. Remember that this will almost certainly be your first and last chance to see an Omega in the South before production starts, and it could also be your only chance this year.

If you do intend to come it would be helpful if you could email me at omega@apdl.co.uk so that we can have some idea of the number of people to expect.

Scottish Omega Demonstration

12th August 2002

Alan Gibson

Further to previous news, Microdigital have agreed to come up to Scotland on September 7th, which would be a Saturday afternoon. They would do a demo of the Omega, followed by a Question & Answers session. I've suggested Livingston following previous suggestions that this is an easily accessible, central location.

What I'm needing to know is how many people would be interested in coming along. I don't need names, just amounts so that we can look at getting a venue the right size. There may be a small entrance fee to help cover the room booking but I'm hoping it will be free so people can bring along as many interested parties as possible.

Please let me know by email/phone any numbers by, say, the end of next week (17th) so that we can announce the venue publically.

!RiscSearch 0.86aß

11th August 2002

Patrick Mortara

I've just uploaded !RiscSearch V0.86aß to www.riscsearch.de> This was urgently necessary because nearly all decoders were not working correctly anymore. Now they're even better than they ever have been.

Changes in V0.086aß:

For all of you, who don't know about !RiscSearch:
!RiscSearch is meant to be a meta-search engine, and AFAIK it is the only one available for RISC OS anywhere. It helps you to find web-pages about a certain topic by asking different search engines about the keywords you supply. It collects results from (at the moment) 9 different engines, filters out duplicate matches and then presents all links in a window of your web-browser.

New Photodesk tutorials available

10th August 2002

Chris Terran

The Vermilion Sands Photodesk resource site has been updated:

Visit the site at http://www.photodesk.iconbar.com/

Both the tutorials use example pictures of the Moon taken with a digital camera, and show how to enhance them. The section on 'real' unsharp masking explains how to use Photodesk's basic image manipulation features to create this powerful technique, which can give much better results than the program's built-in unsharp mask facility.

As always, feedback is welcome: send your questions, suggestions, bouquets and brickbats to mailto:photodesk@iconbar.com

Improved anti-aliasing in ArtWorks

1st August 2002

Martin Wuerthner

Improved anti-aliasing in ArtWorks
Normally, ArtWorks files are rendered using 16 levels of anti-aliasing. In most circumstances, in particular while editing an illustration, this is quite adequate. However, for presentation purposes and for high-quality bitmap output, it is desirable to have more accurate anti-aliasing.

Therefore, I am proud to announce the release of the free AWSwitch utility that allows you to choose between 16, 64 and 128 levels of anti-aliasing in ArtWorks (and other applications that render ArtWorks files). AWSwitch sits on the icon bar and allows you to change the number of anti-aliasing levels with a single mouse click.

You can find further information and download AWSwitch from http://www.mw-software.com/software/awmodules/awswitch.html.
