The Wakefield BBC Micro User Group was founded in April 1983 to provide a self-help forum for owners of the new BBC Micro. The group has held regular meetings each month ever since.
The first meetings were mainly platforms for members to display their skills in programming, hardware additions and modifications. Later we added visits from dealers, software developers and manufacturers, including Acorn themselves, to widen the knowledge and experience of our members.
With the introduction of the Archimedes range the group's name was changed to the Wakefield Acorn Computer (User) Group, and our experience and standing grew. We celebrated our 100th meeting with an exhibition which included an example of every Acorn machine to date, whether produced or not, and a buffet supper. The celebrity speaker was Mike Cook, who was appointed as our first ever honorary member. More recently we added Dave Walker (ex-Acorn customer service manager) to honorary membership.
Since that time our meetings have expanded to include the Internet and all aspects of information technology, as well as the survival and development of the RISC OS platform. We have also set up a WACG Members Chat Group, which is becoming a valuable addition to our facilities.
Right from the start we have issued a monthly newsletter, now entitled Awake. This popular publication is handed to members at meetings, posted to non-attenders in the UK, and e-mailed to overseas members (the most distant being in Australia).
In 1996 we organised the first Wakefield Spring Show, which is now established as a major event in the Acorn/RISC OS world. The planning and organisation of these shows has been a major factor in building the social side of our membership, and in November 1999 we marked our 200th meeting with a celebration dinner for all members.
On 3rd January 2002, the decision was taken to rename the group the Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club to reflect changes in the market.
| Wakefield RISC OS Computer Club (WROCC) is also a RISC OS 4 Authorised Installer (a full list of all Authorised Installers is also available). |
